I disagree with you about the translation being word-for-word. In a translation, the target language is used to express the ideas and emotions conveyed in the source language - and that is seldom accomplished when transferred over word-for-word. In English, we have expressions and set phrases which are very different from those which were used in Ancient Hebrew. For instance, in English we value Triads - like "healthy, wealthy and wise."

I think you are using a specific example and ignoring the overall model here. There are in general two methods in translation. One is to translate meaning-for-meaning and the other is word-for-word (obviously rendered into the proper grammar for the language it is translated into). Older translations of the Bible, for example, try to translate each word into the closest English equivalent, even if the idioms and phrases are generally less meaningful in English. Later translations and more modern translations instead try to choose the more appropriate meaning in English.

The reason it is thought the Book of Mormon is a word-for-word translation is due to the fact the citations of Isaiah closely correspond with the KJB, which is a word-for-word translation. Now, it is possible the Lord only chose to translate those and other parts of the Book of Mormon that closely correspond to the Bible in this manner and chose meaning-for-meaning elsewhere. However, the inelegance and difficulty of the phrasing seems to indicate that it is probably generally true the whole of the book is a word-for-word translation.
