Let me preface this by saying that I am a TBM and I don't intend on ever leaving the Church. I acknowledge that most who leave don't find another faith. We're used to born-agains in our face with their ignorance. Let's be honest: Evangelical Christianity is not very appealing to a group of people with the educational profile of Mormons.

But let's also recognize that that atheism offers nothing but despair. There are alternatives available. Philosopher Richard Sherlock, for example, converted to Catholicism because he said that faith needs to be rational and Mormonism is based too much on feelings. What I find especially appealing is Eastern Orthodoxy. They bear an uncanny resemblance to what Mormons are used to: temples, priesthood, deification, no guilt from original sin, continuing revelation, degrees of glory, and much more, all within a Trinitarian framework.

I didn't "characterize" atheists. There are plenty of atheist thinkers who believe atheism is nihilistic, e.g. Nietschze. Like V.S. Ramachandran said, we're nothing but a pack of neurons. That's quite a suicidal philosophy to live by.

Ludwigm is right about his grouping in regards to educational profiles. Statistically Mormons complete college at a rate slightly higher than average, but below many other denominations, with the majority of the hit due to the high drop out rate of Mormon women.

I'm not ex-Mormon but when someone figures out LDS truth claims are not true, it's likely they will figure it out about Christianity as well.

Why not just go with what the evidence tells us, and not worry about that which we don't know. If I leave Mormonism I don't need or want to replace it with something that has some resemblance to Mormonism.
