My First Rifle = My First Homicide

Post by _MeDotOrg »

Mail on Line wrote:Authorities in southern Kentucky say a 2-year-old girl has been accidentally shot and killed by her 5-year-old brother, who was playing with a .22-caliber rifle he received as a gift.

Kentucky State Police said the toddler, identified as Caroline Starks, was shot just after 1pm CDT on Tuesday in Burkesville and was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the children's mother was at home at the time.

Weapon: The 5-year-old boy shot dead his sister with a Crickett .22 caliber rifle that he was given a year ago

'It's a Crickett,' Mr White said. 'It's a little rifle for a kid. ...The little boy's used to shooting the little gun,' he said about the weapon.

You know, this thing could have been prevented if the little sister would have had her own riffle with which to defend herself.

actually prevention would have come from the 5 year old going through a proper background check.

I have a suggestion for a background check:

Adult: How old are you?

Child: Five years old.

Adult: Are you involved in the production of blood diamonds?

Child: No.

Adult: Is there a classroom full of North Korean 6 year-olds who plan to invade Kentucky?

Child: No.

Adult: Then you have no business having a firearm.

Evidently this is beyond the parenting skills of certain folks in Southern Kentucky.

Kentucky ranks 11th among the states in gun ownership.

everyone will always admit they have no involvement in the production of blood diamonds...how do you even put that on a resume'?
and if the classroom was full of Koreans, then the invasion already happened (Wolverines!)

So, i suppose you can reference some scholarly or government funded study that concludes what the proper age is for receiving a fire arm?...or did you have some arbitrary age already in mind?

Good point Droopy.....

Just because there are stupid PARENTS, and stupid people who would give a child a dangerous TOOL without proper supervision, doesn't make it the TOOLS FAULT, and means it needs to be "banned".

When are liberals going to get a brain? A gun is a tool, as even a tool is. Both are dangerous if used improperly, irresponsibly, and without proper training. But they BOTH serve important functions to SOCIETY for that THEY are designed for.

Either you believe in Freedom or choice or you believe in Fascism.

Also, liberals as usual misrepresent the facts. "Homicide" is not what occurred here.
What occurred here was a neglegent but unintentional accident. Accidents are not Homicide morons!

That's a terrible tragedy, but I don't see how it contributes to the "gun control" debate.

No one has suggested banning .22 rifles as far as I know. And the parent probably would have passed a background check.

Maybe some mandatory training for people who buy guns? And checking to make sure they aren't planning on giving the gun to someone?

Ultimately, this is a situation with terrifically bad parental judgement, which will always be a problem. We can't outlaw stupidity.

That is a wonderful, poetic turn of phrase. I wonder if ldsfaqs has ever considered writing greeting cards for Hallmark?

It's so versatile. The word gun could be substituted with grenade, landmine or even flame thrower.

Edit: I wonder how many five year olds have accidentally killed their little sister with a socket wrench?
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.
