The Geography of Hate

Post by _Doctor Steuss »

An interresting map of the location of tweets that contain homophobic, racist or abliest language.

For an explanation of the project: http://www.floatingsheep.org/2013/05/hatemap.html

For the previous project (that mapped tweets that used racial slurs when referring to President Obama following the election): http://www.floatingsheep.org/2012/11/ma ... se-to.html

the most being in areas with the densest population? shocking!

many of those words are used in jest these days anyways...kinda like one black man calling another black man "my nigger"...no hate involved.

That map is gay

True. I regularly call my hispanic friends "spicks," and my Asian friends "gooks" in jest. And my gay friends think it's a real hoot when I call them fags.

ETA: My apologies for the above flippant response. In all seriousness, I have never heard one of my gay friends refer to each other as "fags," and I have definitely never heard any of my hispanic friends call each other "wetbacks" or "spicks." Some of the words may be used as (in the eyes of the user) non-hateful slang, but I think some of the words would be hard to defend from that perspective. Also, if you look at some of the words like "wetback," you will see that it is largely confined to a fairly small area.

Unless there's a large population of African-Americans in southern Idaho, I'm guessing the large number of tweets using the term "Nigger" aren't exactly from one black man calling another black man that word with no hate involved.

considering i am a minority myself, i can affirm that it happens quite often and without malice.
The fact that we can offer contradictory anecdotal evidence on the subject negates your "map".

Right, because anecdotes Trump data.

Wrong. If you zoom in on the map, you'll see the greatest concentrations are in rural areas.

Sorry, I had edited my response to add a bit more (my initial response was flippant, for which I apologize... it's early and I tend to be a curmudgeon in the mornings).

Do you believe that the high concentration of the term "wetback" in Texas, as opposed to Las Vegas or Los Angeles can be explained simply as Hispanics calling each other the term in jest? What about the high concentration of the term "n*****" in southern Idaho?

i never disputed the data, just the hair-brained conclusion being offered from that data.
and anecdotes don't Trump data, they clarify it....data taken out of context is for fags.

if i tweet "i hate it when George Jefferson says nigger" then that is "data" for the occurrence of the word "hate" and the word "nigger"...yet clearly not the type of hate/bigotry being inferred/concluded by the OP.

Your inability to master simple concepts lately has me wondering if your account has been hacked.

does not matter what i believe, what matters is the facts. If you have facts/data that clarifies the nature and source of this data then i could make a decision...but to assume i want to jump on board because one guy may be tweeting the word "wetback" 100 times a day is absurd.

But surely one can realize that african american community may be more prolific, in the public forum, of using the word nigger without malice....the same may true of any example.

What has become clear is that you are as guilty as any for profiling ans stereotyping...otherwise i am not sure what you are trying to infer about Texas....and besides how could anyone in Idaho know what a nigger is? its not like there are any in that state.

You've shown time and time again you can't put together a logical argument to save your life. Now you've made clear you're simply an ignorant bigoted asshole. As Tobin says....
