Deseret Chemical Depot? Is that a division of Deseret Industries?

While on the topic of Syria's chemical weapons, it is of interest to note that Syria is one of the only countries (perhaps the only country aside from Russia and the US) known to have stockpiles of weaponized VX.

VX is also an organophosphate, but is less volatile than GB and tends to persist in the environment. It can thus be an effective area denial weapon.

VX is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and the most toxic nerve agent ever developed.

Median lethal dose for humans is on the order of 10 mg. And a dose that will make you wish you were dead, with possible permanent neurological damage if not treated promptly, is a lot lower than that.

Back before W invaded Iraq, there were rumors of chem weapons moving out of Iraq and into Syria. Is there any truth to that?

Nope. If Saddam had chemical weapons, his obvious choice would be to use them on the forces invading his country, not ship them somewhere else.

There were reports at the time of Sadam sending his chemical weapons to Syria "for safe keeping". Hard to verify. It is more likely (IMHO) that Assad got any chemical weapons he has directly from the Russians. This is especially true in the case of VX.

From my limited understanding, it seems that chemical weapons are mostly used when there's no fear of retaliation from the opposing side--notwithstanding the accidental release of mustard gas in Bari, Italy in 1943. The Japanese used a good deal of chemical weapons in China, but only because the ROC had none of these types of weapons.

World War I would be a very large exception.

Yeah, WW1 is the obvious exception, but it's also the reason why nobody uses chemical weapons if they think they'll have to face chemical retaliation. WW1 its certainly the reason why Hitler never allowed chem weapons to be used--because he was temporarily blinded during a mustard gas attack in WW1.
