Apostolic Twittering....official or not?

Post by _Bazooka »

By Tuesday afternoon, Elder Ballard's account — @M_RBallard — had more than 11,200 Twitter followers. In fewer than 24 hours, more than 7,200 began to follow Elder Holland at @J_R_Holland.

Speculation buzzed about other accounts found by excited Twitter users, but an LDS Church spokeswoman declined to confirm they were official. Clearly, the launch of apostle Twitter accounts is a soft one.

"Twitter accounts for other church leaders won’t be announced or promoted until they are actively being used," Jessica Moody said.

Moody did confirm, as she did Monday after Elder Ballard's tweet, that other church leaders will be using Twitter.

I saw that the DN article was published late on May 7th. Why would the Church decline to confirm the accounts were official?

Exactly, it's not a difficult, or trick, question.

They're either Church facilitated official Twitter accounts, or they're the personal Twitter accounts of the individuals concerned. That the Church PR department is hiding behind a "no comment" is utterly ridiculous, and leads one to suspect that they are official but that the Church wants breathing space to dismiss them if they turn out to be a PR disaster.

On a slightly different note, can a Church Apostle publish something in his capacity as an Apostle without it being considered official?

Spot on. It's the standard plausible deniability. Same reason all the new essays are unsigned.

[apologist hat] Not so fast! Since when does something being "authorized" mean it is "official?" For example, apostles are "authorized" to eat only Jolly Green Giant brand green beans. This does not mean that this is the "official" brand of green beans for the church. Checkmate, apostate. [/apologist hat]
