This one is one of my all time favorites ---- Sung here by Billy Murray with the Paul Whitman Orchestra 1924: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq4TaKcmtjY
PS> This is a pre-electric or acoustic recording. ELECTRIC recordings were introduced in 1925.

Steelhead's reference, a year ago, to Agnus Dei, reminded me of one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard - also a Mass: Vivaldi's Gloria. This piece is Domine Deus, Agnus Dei. The counterpoint (correct term?) between the contralto/mezzo-soprano and the cello is incredible, in my opinion.

For anyone who likes baroque music, and has never heard of Vivaldi in association with anything other than The Four Seasons, I thoroughly recommend listening to the entire Gloria - found in many versions on YouTube, e.g., Vivaldi's Gloria: The Monteverdi Choir.

I also particularly like the "dueling soprano" piece: Laudamus te.

For me, the emotional evocativeness of this music is almost equal to that of Eric Clapton's performances back in the good old days when he played with The Yardbirds, and with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. (really dating myself here)

I like so many different types of music, depending on the mood.
Lately, I've been leaning toward instrumental - no lyrics - less verbal but still expressing a lot...

Here is a Little Civil War ditty in commemoration of Decoration Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwH_mvsDJro

Kitty Popcorn (Or the Soldier's Pet)
(Henry Clay Work)

Did you ever hear the story of the loyal cat? Meyow!
Who was faithful to the flag and ever followed that? Meyow!
Oh she had a happy home beneath a southern sky,
But she packed her goods and left it when our troops came nigh,
And she fell into the column with a low, glad cry, Meyow!

chorus: Poor Kitty Pop corn! Buried in a snow drift now;
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!

Round her neck she wore a ribbon, she was black as jet, Meyow!
And at once a gallant claimed her for a soldier's pet, Meyow!
All the perils of the battle and the march she bore
Climbing on her master's shoulder when her feet were sore
Whisp'ring in his ear with wonder at the cannon's roar, Meyow!

chorus: Poor Kitty Pop corn! Buried in a snow drift now;
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!

Now the "cruel war" is over and the troops disband, Meyow!
Kitty follows as a pilgrim to the northern land, Meyow!
Ah! but sorrow overtakes her, and her master dies
While she sadly sits a-gazing in his dim blue eyes
Till by strangers rudely driven from the door she cries Meyow!

chorus: Poor Kitty Pop corn! Buried in a snow drift now;
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!

So she wanders on the prairie till she sees his form, Meyow!
Carried forth and buried roughly mid the driving storm, Meyow!
Oh! her slender frame it shivers in the northern blast
As she seeks the sandy mound on which the snow falls fast
And alone amid the darkness there she breathes her last, Meyow!

chorus: Poor Kitty Pop corn! Buried in a snow drift now;
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!

Henery Clay Work also wrote one of the most popular songs ever written that is still sung to this day, "My Grandfathers Clock" !

I also submit this as a reminder to all of the terrible price that has been paid so the America might be free ------- Henry Clay Work "Picture on the Wall"

http://chasvoice.blogspot.com/2011/10/p ... allad.html

THE PICTURE ON THE WALL
(Henry Clay Work)

'Tis noon of night, the sable clouds hang weeping in the sky;
Alone I sit, where fancies flit like spectral shadows by.
Methinks I see familiar forms, and on before them all,
So fair, so calm, so wondrous like, wondrous like the picture on the wall.

chorus: Among the brave and loyal, How many lov'd ones fall!
Whose friends bereft, have only left, only left
A picture on the wall.

I hear the press of eager feet upon my parlor floor,
A moment, and my willing arms Enclasp my boy once more.
I feel his warm breath on my cheek but when his name I call,
A shadowy finger points me, points me to his picture on the wall.

chorus: Among the brave and loyal, How many lov'd ones fall!
Whose friends bereft, have only left, only left
A picture on the wall.

The moon's full radiance struggles through and lights my room once more,
And thus shal Heav'n, O heart of mine, Thy seeming loss restore.
Its light shall gild tne present gloom, and sweeter spells enthrall,
Than that which binds me to this sweet, to this sweet true picture on
the wall.

chorus: Among the brave and loyal, How many lov'd ones fall!
Whose friends bereft, have only left, only left
A picture on the wall.

This is how I remember the song. Yes, I did see this movie in Technicolor/Cinerama/Stereophonic sound when it first came out. And it was a BLOCKBUSTER at that time with all those cameo stars, stampede, Indians, and rapids! :eek: :surprised: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQu6mc3VvU4

But how can anyone can forget the theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncAbKYJBVR0

I also found this tidbit of information about the movie: http://news.moviefone.com/2013/02/20/ho ... niversary/

This song from 1939 was still very popular in the early 1950's. I heard it on an RCA Victor LP Record called 60 Years of Music America Loves Best. Benny Goodman Band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heXQ-zgyfQY

What is really astounding is that such recordings back then were accomplished in one take and were single channel. That means that if there was a "mistake" the entire recording had to be done again. They didn't have a drum track, a horn track, and a vocal track. There was no computer remixing. The instrumentalist had to be at the top of their game.
