I'm okay with the whole dark/black/filthy skin idea being more symbolic. It's symbolic of the barbarian. It doesn't necessary have anything to do with pigment. It is just referring to the uncivilized and lower class. Many slaves are in this category too. This is why it was okay for Nephites to take Lamanites as slaves to help mine precious ore and build temples.

The Book of Mormon is founded on an incredibly insulting premise: That a western Judeo-Christian culture was required to explain the complexity displayed in what was seen as ancient remains of an extinct peoples.
