I think that you would find that the World Congress of Families opposes CEDAW and other measures to ensure reproductive rights and freedom from domestic violence for women. It's not just about SSA, it's about controlling and suppressing half of the human race.

So true, Maksutov. The LDS Church, by supporting the World Congress of Families, should own up to its clear opposition to Roe v. Wade. In my view, the Church is simply being disingenuous to downright dishonest when it pretends that it has any wiggle room on these issues, has any interest in women's rights, or acknowledges scientific findings on issues of gender. The LDS Church clearly supports a retrograde position backed by willfully ignorant ideologues and bigots.

Welcome to the party, LDS Church.

Wilkins was up to his ears collaborating with Muslims and ultraconservative Catholics and Jews when he died. One of the Three Amigos expressed disappointment that there were faculty at BYU that found this unseemly. Looks like the Brethren like this direction and so they're doubling down. Maybe they're becoming more mainstream at the MI but everywhere else they're trying to compete with pukes like Dobson and Phelps. Ugh. And this after touting their great victory in negotiating local laws re: gay discrimination.

At best they are speaking out of both sides of their mouths. At best.

Where is the BYU center for helping inner city families living in poverty?

It is so clear that they cannot see beyond their own ideology and their own community.

They don't really care what happens to these other families. They are only concerned about their own world.

The LDS Church remains a church for white, married, middle-class, conservatives. Unless one fits its narrow definition of good society, then one is doomed to stay on the fringes of the LDS Church, if one does in fact manage to hang on.

Having lived in an inner city ward for a few years, I witnessed firsthand as the executive secretary how the LDS Church was angry when the bishop gave too much financial assistance to his ward members. When my bishop did not comply, he was replaced by someone living outside of the ward, someone from the suburbs.

Jesus placed the care of the poor at the center of his gospel, not issues of gender.

The LDS Church has clearly lost its way. It has given up the Gospel of Jesus Christ for a mess of ideological pottage.

this is a good point.

another prominent Mormon WCF speaker i didn't mention because he's primarily a political figure is Gov. Gary Herbert. if you write to Gov. Herbert asking why he decided to elevate this hate group with his participation in their conference, you'll get a polite form letter explaining that Gov. Herbert does not support anti-gay discrimination and pointing to his recent signing of Utah's (belated) statewide ENDA law.

as anyone who has followed the progress of that bill closely over the past several years knows, the only reason it passed and the only reason Herbert signed it is because the LDS Church finally explicitly endorsed it. but if Oaks and Ballard (at least) support the vehemently pro-discrimination WCF, why did they allow to the Utah ENDA to become law? i've never accepted the notion that it was just a cynical PR move, so that leaves just one possibility that i can think of: factionalism within the Twelve.

I wonder if the WCF's stance on homosexuality is similar to Mr. Carson's view?

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ben-carson- ... into-gays/

In an interview that aired Wednesday on CNN, Carson was asked whether being gay is a choice, and he replied, "Absolutely."

"Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight, and when they come out, they're gay," he explained. "So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question."

...

As his remarks about gays and prison will attest, Carson has made a crusade against political correctness a central element of his public profile. He's said Obamacare is the worst thing to happen to America since slavery, compared the IRS targeting scandal to Gestapo tactics under Nazi Germany, and warned that gay marriage, like pedophilia and bestiality, would undermine society.

His running commentary has earned him a passionate following among elements of the conservative base, but it's also left some in the GOP wondering whether he'll be able to emerge as a serious national candidate.

According to Larry Jacobs the WCF's managing director homosexuality is a "symptom of a disease" which threatens the very future of the human race.

Jeeeeeezuz. And the Mormon church is aligning itself with these WCF nutjobs? Mr. Mak has his work cut out for him and his other grassroots pioneers!

Ben Carson is a Seventh Day Adventist. Folks, if there's a nice-but-nuttier bunch around than the Mormons, it's the SDAs. They're first cousins in their theology and in some of their cultural aspects, too. But at least the SDAs got associated with breakfast cereals instead of with the Osmonds. God must still be laughing at that one.
