I wasn't aware of that case, were you and what do you think of the way the church handled it?

Bringing in the book Paper Dolls, in my opinion, unnecessarily complicates the discussion here, as that book has its own problems with credibility. From a reddit discussion a month ago on an AMA Karren was scheduled to do, here's a comment that sums up the issue pretty succinctly:
sleepygeeks wrote:There was a craze in the USA that dealt with repressed memory's of Satanic sexual abuse, The whole thing was over a period of about 10~15 years. The insanity went international as the public collectively lost their crap over the nonsense. Obviously this spread into more then just Satanic rituals, There was a massive witch-hunt against pedophiles and they often had all the logic of a stereotypical witch trial.

Books like "Paper Dolls" were written in the middle of all that nonsense.

TV, Movies, books, etc... all liked to stereotype the Satanic ritual sex stuff, it became a clichéd trope.

I have already stated up thread that I am personally convinced by the same evidence you are looking at, that Micklesen abused K. Because I am convinced of that I interpret the documentation differently than you.

Then that is our point of departure. I don't interpret the documents to get to a pre-determined conclusion. I'm trying to look at all the evidence we have and to figure out what happened. If you approach the documentation with a belief that the molestation occurred, of course you are going to interpret the documentation differently than I do.

Mary wrote:I am using my own experience of lds royal families and of the handling of abuse cases in the church that I am personally aware of, to guage whether Ron's account is probable and if so to what extent.

That's another point of departure. I'm not interested in whether Ron's account is probable. I'm interested in figuring out what actually happened.

I'm not really concerned with how what Ron describes may fit with some pattern or other when the evidence in the case contradicts significant portions of his story.

Mary wrote:I wasn't aware of that case, were you and what do you think of the way the church handled it?

No. I'm not familiar with that case. Given what we know about the Catholic pedophilia scandals and numerous cases of sexual abuse by sexual predators embedded in churches, to find similar abusers in the LDS church is not surprising. It's also not surprising that there are documented examples of leadership handling those cases in terrible and stupid manners. None of that has any bearing on Ron's credibility when he tells us this story.

This case is full of good examples of terrible handling of the situation. The mother never should have reacted to her daughter's story the way she did. Mickelson should never have called Ron's brother on the carpet the way he did. Regardless of whether she felt the daughter's story amounted to a violation of Utah's sexual abuse law, the police detective should have conducted a proper interview of MIckelsen. The Q12 shouldn't have failed to answer Ron's letters. The Eldest son shouldn't have been told that he had to love and forgive his grandfather or he couldn't go on a mission. The list goes on. But none of that points to a coordinated conspiracy to coverup known pedophilia at the highest ranks of the LDS church.

And none of it is evidence of whether the grandfather actually molested his granddaughter. All we have for that is the daughter's recollection, the circumstances under which she first expressed her recollection, and Ron's description of a phone call he wasn't a party to.

He also wants me to believe that there is an underground organization of psychiatrists who have massive amounts of evidence of organized sexual abuse within the LDS church and hierarchy, including apostles, that they are keeping quiet about, thus letting the abuse continue. Really? And I'm supposed to believe this based on Ron's story about what a couple of anonymous individuals told him seven years ago?***repeatedly bangs head on desk***

I think even he found that far fetched as he stated.

On what are you basing that? on Ron's blog, he states his experience with Mr. Psy rather matter-of-factly, and actually uses it to segue into a supportive explanation of the stories of ritual abuse in the Pace memo, that ends this way (PB = Presiding Bishopric):

Page 10 Paragraph 10: After 3½ pages of scriptural support and testimony, the PB states, WE (plural) have allegations to indicate that this is true of people in high places today in both the Church and the government who are leading this dual life.

Who is the “We”? Whomever THEY are, I join my testimony with his, as I have lived and experienced this corruption firsthand (and second hand through the victims coming forward).

The ensuing 2½ pages consist of the Presiding Bishopric’s testimony of what he is saying is true. Unfortunately, we have never heard from him since.

I'm cynical enough to see a plan here, as Karren seems to have created enough publicity to carve out an area of financially beneficial expertise attributed to himself, as he moves further and further away from his daughter's situation. His last line reads:

I'm not following anyone down the Satanic ritual abuse rabbit hole. http://www.slate.com/articles/health_an ... abuse.html

Why?

I'd call that a baseless and malicious smear. I hope you will consider deleting it.

But on this thread, that just isn't going to happen.

A malicious smear? Chap, you wound me to the core!! No, it's just my opinion on where I think this is ultimately going. For the reasons I stated I don't believe it's baseless.

Oh well, your post has about as much going for it as 90% of the rest of the interpretations of the parties' motivations on this thread. At least you aren't simply shouting abuse like some others.

Have fun. It's only real people. And it seems to make the posters feel good, so what's not to like?

Well, pretty much every thread on here talks about real people, so I'm not seeing your point there.

As for your opinion that my interpretation has as much going for it as 90% of other people's interpretations, that's pretty typical as well--in fact one could argue that every post by every person reflects that person's interpretations, so I'm not seeing the meaning behind that phrase either.

Let me go out on a limb here. Do you strongly disagree with my opinion? Do you feel I am damaging Ron in some way by expressing my opinion? if so, then share your opinion! These oblique attacks are confusing.

I would especially be interested if you have an alternate interpretation of why Ron's posts are now going away from the personal and to the more general situation (i.e. the latest post with discussion of Pace Memo). That really seems like an abrupt change of topic, so if you have another interpretation, I would be sincerely interested in hearing it.

Chap, there's a good old American expression that describes this thread and its relatives: clusterf***. Nobody knows anything and everybody has an opinion. And now it's time for me to duck.
