Although I didn't watch Mr. Rogers when I was young, I have with my kids. He was such a sweet guy, one of the few who have used television to uplift and inspire healthy attitudes.

He defended PBS to Congress

There was a show on from 1963 to 1964 that I loved on ABC Saturday nights called Hootenanny. Here is one of those famous moments I recall: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBN_8vssJe4

Some prisons are beginning to establish programs like choirs to help inmates transition from prison to life in the real world.

One of our famous pianists regularly makes concerts in prisons, motions the inmates to learn to play (no, not on piano, but on small synthesizer...), sometimes teaches them to basic.

He is Fellegi Ádám. Today he is 74 yo.
He have no English entry in wikipedia (only in French) - I may make one.

by the way my comment wasn't approved on Celestial, three times.
Probably because I've referred in it something of Hungarian culture...

- To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. - Cardinal Bellarmine at the trial of Galilei

Something for Mother's Day: George Broderick recites --- "The Departure," 1st numbered Victor Record 1900 --- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcIEbKRMF6w

"M-O-T-H-E-R" sung by Henry Burr 1916 ---- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7tLT8e5KnA

It must be remembered that these were recorded in CAMDEN, New Jersey which was once considered the recording capital of the world...

Here is one piece of music everyone has likely heard whoever formally graduated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moL4MkJ-aLk

And there are words to boot!

Lyrics

Solo
Dear Land of Hope, thy hope is crowned,
God make thee mightier yet!
On Sov'ran brows, beloved, renowned,
Once more thy crown is set.
Thine equal laws, by Freedom gained,
Have ruled thee well and long;
By Freedom gained, by Truth maintained,
Thine Empire shall be strong.

Chorus
Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet,
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.

Solo
Thy fame is ancient as the days,
As Ocean large and wide:
A pride that dares, and heeds not praise,
A stern and silent pride;
Not that false joy that dreams content
With what our sires have won;
The blood a hero sire hath spent
Still nerves a hero son.

Chorus

As a salute to Fathers everywhere for the up and coming Father's day This song was once played on the Dr. Demento Show back in the 1970's. A rare time he incorporated an Edison cylinder record.
I think everyone with a father remembers an episode when things didn't go quite so smoothly... http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/searc ... linder3025

WHEN FATHER LAID THE CARPET ON THE STAIRS (1905)

We all stood round attentive, father's orders for to take
And not a word was whispered, such a fuss did father make
Although with smothered chuckles our little ribs did ache
When father laid the carpet on the stairs
First one of us he sent away to purchase carpet tacks
Another one for carpet thread, and one to bring bees-wax
And one to find the hammer, and the gimlet, and the axe
When father laid the carpet on the stairs.

Chorus: When father laid the carpet on the stairs
At first he put on quite a lot of airs
But soon his bones were aching,
I thought his back was breaking
When father laid the carpet on the stairs.

Then father grabbed the carpet and he took it to the top
The roll was rather heavy and so father let it drop
But the carpet slithered down, it didn't seem to want to stop
And father slithered with it down the stairs
Then father rubbed his funny-bone, and father rubbed his knee
And if anyone was laughiong father glared around to see
And though we were nearly throttled still we bottle up our glee
When father laid the carpet on the stairs.

Chorus:

Then father tried unrolling it, and climbing bit by bit
He got it right up to the top and stooped to make it fit
Then p'r'aps it was an accident or p'r'aps to show his grit
He tobogganed on his waist-coat down the stairs
We all of us enjoyed it, it was bliss without alloy
Although to show our mirth we all were naturally coy
And mother went behind the pantry door to hide her joy
When the carpet laid poor father on the stairs.

Chorus:

After super human struggles, father got the carpet spread
He tried to drive a tack in, but he hit his thumb instead
He dropped the hammer with a grunt, and oh the things he said
When father laid the carpet on the stairs
Then father used some language that is not in common use
And the hammer and the tacks and things he covered with abuse
And father, he consigned the stairs and carpet to the deuce
So mother laid the carpet on the stairs.

Chorus:

Here is a hot Larry Clinton hit from 1938. I love how fast the 78rpms spin, it seemed to fit the music and the times... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSgAVTA-5RE
