From the statement of the poor family, re:Lemmie's link.

Careful planning went into the event and specific plans were made to cope with the anticipated hot weather. She stopped regularly on the trail to consume water and salty foods and had trained outdoors in preparation for the activity. The group had walked six-and-a-half of the planned seven miles when Meaghan expressed that she was not feeling well. She was immediately taken by ATV to the medical tent and was treated by the on-site doctor and registered nurses.

Some time after her arrival in the medical tent, Meaghan began to have seizures. She was flown to St. John’s hospital in Tulsa. Although there has been some speculation, the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death.

The cause of death was heat stroke. Which, was utterly preventable I might add. The seizures are the final tip off in the description.

A statement released by her family Wednesday reads:

It is with heavy heart and sorrow that we share the passing of Meaghan Lee Blair. Meg was the wife of her beloved husband Michael Blair and mother to two young children. She and her family lived in Northwest Arkansas where Meaghan worked for Wal-Mart’s corporate headquarters and her husband is a mechanical engineering student at the University of Arkansas.

Meaghan leaves behind her husband and children, her parents, Brad and Maureen Querry, and her husband’s parents, Jim and Teresa Blair, all of whom reside in Northwest Arkansas.

Meaghan also had three younger sisters and an extended family who live in various places around the country. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where her service was directed to children and attended the Rogers 1st Ward. (A ward is a local congregation.)

Meaghan died at 1:15 a.m. on June 21. Prior to her death, she had been participating in a church youth activity near Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Meaghan and her husband Michael were volunteering as youth leaders. The activity was a handcart trek, commemorating the sacrifices made by mid-1800s pioneers who walked across the plains to Utah. This specific activity was scheduled to last three days and had begun on the morning of Monday, June 20.

Meaghan’s family wishes to thank the medical staff—both those who were on site and those at St. John’s hospital—for their care of Meaghan. They also express their profound gratitude for the outpouring of support and love in the wake of Meaghan’s passing.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 24, at 3 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse at 2805 N. Dixieland Rd, Rogers, Arkansas. Funeral services and burial will be held in Herriman, Utah next week.

Well. And with that statement, there went any hopes that the family might have had of recompense for the loss from a dumb LDS idea in the first place.

No surprise. Here is some information from the site of their legal counsel, Sarah Waddoup:
I am actively involved in the Rogers congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Currently, I am the volunteer director of the church’s youth group for pre-teen and teenage girls.

The Rogers stake sponsored the trek during which Blair died.

Wouldn't this be a conflict of interest?

FYI that Sarah Waddoups has agreed to be spokesperson for the Blair & Querry families to provide information to media and others on their behalf. She is available at swaddoups@gmail.com or 479.366.4328. We're still finalizing memorial and funeral details with the family.

So Waddoups is not Meaghan Blair's family's legal counsel, she is the LDS church's legal counsel, taking over. Definitely a conflict of interest.

The more I read the weirder this gets:
PAWHUSKA, Oklahoma - The Oklahoma heat claimed the life an Arkansas woman this week. The 29-year-old died Monday of a heat stroke while at a Mormon church camp in Pawhuska.

Paramedics said they took five juveniles to the hospital for heat-related illnesses last week - three of those minors were unconscious when medics got to camp.

Meaghan Blair was serving as an adult supervisor for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Osage Prairie Pioneer Trek. The pioneer trek is a tradition to teach LDS youth about the Mormon pioneer exodus of the mid-1800s.

They dress in pioneer clothing, sing and dance, then hike for miles, pulling handcarts just like their ancestors; and this month, some members are doing all that in sweltering Oklahoma sun.

“If you're gonna be outside, you're gonna be affected by the heat,” Pawhuska EMS director Don McCorkle said.

Before the death, there were five minors, 3 unconscious, taken from the camp by paramedics and hospitalized??? they didn't figure out something wasn't working right?
From the comments:
Mike Haring

They are trying to recreate their heritage which is noble.. However these participants were not raised, lived or conditioned in the same environment as the originals. Society has changed and it is expected people change accordingly. Death and Unconscious children is a supreme warning that it’s time to re-evaluate the cause and effect.

Blair has not been the only person with a heat-related issue from the camp. Five minors were taken by EMS for treatment last week, three of which were unconscious at the time EMS arrived.

This pisses me off. It was so unnecessary and totally avoidable. During a period of excessive heat with warnings galore out to take precautions, these idiots put on multiple layers of clothing and went for a walk on the prairie. Can you say irresponsible? Howe about just plain stupid. And they were in charge of a group of children? I know our ancestors who settled America did so under extreme conditions, but these fools had a choice. And made a bad one. Now those lovely children will grow up without their mother. For what? A jumped up history lesson. Pitiful

As news leaks out about how endangered the kids were throughtout the usa as the church demanded these treks, a class action suit should be filed- however you can bet your sweet ass kirton and mcconkie are gathering the information on the plus side of the coin to put the church in the clear.

i see a class action suit just ahead-but watch how the tbm's so brainwashed will say almost to a person-" it's not the church's fault."

beg to differ-it sure as hell is!!

What the hell has happened to the LDS church? It's replaced roadshows with pioneer deprivation re-enactments for the mid-teeners? The LDS kids today are pathetic for going along with this s***, and LDS parents that push their kids to go on these re-enactments are assholes.

I feel for this young woman's husband and young children, but all the way up with a red hot poker for her father in the stake presidency. All they did due to the heat was make a few adjustments rather than, god forbid, cancel or postpone it? Assholes the whole lot of them.

At least the LDS church that had me suckered during my youth did not have flaming idiots for local leaders.

Amen. I feel exactly the same way. We did road shows, stake musicals, film contests, etc. This is just sad.
