I'm a mid-90's shooter too, and I always find my best round of golf is the first one after a long break. My expectations are low and I'm just happy to be out there.

When I play regularly, however, my expectations slowly rise, I inadvertently put more pressure on myself, and my game suffers.

Having a good round of golf can be a curse. I once shot a 43 on a 9-hole par 36, and I've been chasing that dragon like a heroin addict ever since.

The one and only time I played a round of real golf (not miniature golf) was on the base golf course of Kunsan AB in Korea, when I was stationed there in the USAF. I scored in the mid nineties. Several people I have told that story to seemed impressed by that score, for a first time golfer, until I admitted it was only a 9 hole golf course.

This reminds me of a story about a wealthy Jewish gentleman, who had been a workaholic all his life, with almost zero interest in anything not work related, who decided to retire and try something new. He had heard something about this game called "golf" and used his immense wealth and influence to buy his way into an exclusive country club, and hired a renowned pro golfer to instruct him how to play. The pro demonstrated how to hold and swing the club, and stressed the importance of the follow through, and said "now you try it." The old gentleman picked up the club, and tried his best to emulate what the Pro had told and shown him, and hit the ball straight down the fairway, 200 yards, onto the green, where it rolled right into the hole. The second hole was a 300 yarder, and the exact same thing happened again. The third hole was a 400 yarder with a right angle dogleg in the middle. The man carefully assessed the situation, and hit the ball straight and true to the corner of the dogleg, and bounced it off a tree onto the green, where it rolled and came to a stop about an inch from the hole. After this miss, he looked at the pro and noticed for the first time the shocked and dumbfounded look on the speechless pro's face and exclaimed, "Oh come on man, give me a break! This is only the first time I played the game! You can't expect me to be perfect at it!
