It could have been a sexual harassment, or intellectual property dispute or a restraining order...all of these things have been hinted at but Rosebud refuses to disclose this information. Only that she has evidence and documentation that would really make JD look bad)
So tell me, cwald. In your estimation what is her motivation for mentioning this piece repeatedly over the period of years that she's posted here?
Because in my view, if you have the answer to that, you have it all.
So what is it?

As I see it..Rosebud should/could take a huge load off her shoulders..those in transition from leaving Mormonism and going through JD and Mormon Stories to do it...are grownups. She needs to know that she is not responsible for them.

Do you assume that her intentions are entirely altruistic?

I really don't know and try not to judge..but she has mentioned this several times now. Taking care of those who may get suckered by John..I really don't know..but if this is even part of her reason..time to let that go.

And I don't believe that, for all his flaws--and they are plentiful, I am sure--JD is a "dangerous man," the kind of person who really merits being the target of someone else's endless crusade. I believe he is the kind of guy who overreaches, makes mistakes, gets into messy situations, and does not handle them all that gracefully. I have seen that unfold countless times over the past decade.
Hi, Kish!
This is a good synopsis, I think.
What I am wondering is whether you would think the same description might apply to Joseph Smith?
Or do you think there was more (or less) at play there?

Hmmm. Not exactly. Dehlin operates within the paradigm that Smith originated, but he is quite different from Smith. Smith was a creative genius, and he was also pretty bold in engaging in a problematic relationship with what most people would consider the facts. I think it is possible/fine to have a measure of sympathy for him, and I think it is possible/fine to value what he created in Mormonism, but what he did at certain times crossed some bright red lines in my value system. I think murdering Smith was morally wrong, but I also think Smith had to reckon with the situation he had created.
All of this I hold separate with the potential within the Mormon faith, if it were only possible for people to abandon the negative elements of Joseph Smith's legacy.

Oh, I see; I agree everyone has got their own definitions. I was actually asking, in your bolded sentence, what you meant by the interpretation falling "very squarely along male/female gender lines." Am I missing something here? I'm not seeing the opinions being separable by gender. For example you and I seem to be pretty much in agreement on this, and I'm pretty sure we're different genders.
Kishkumen wrote:OK. I get, I get it. Apparently a number of you were unaware that some LDS women do size up men in their wards in polygamy fantasies. I stand corrected.
But, yes, it is a thing.
Just chiming in really quick, but this was definitely a thing I witnessed in my home Ward and Young Adult Ward. I just assumed it was a cultural thing, so I'm surprised there are people who are surprised. Interesting!
