Doesn't r/Mormon take the same approach to give and take dialogue of differing opinions as the Mormon D&D board (or are they even more restrictive in not allowing any dissent)?

If so, they are a board with a much different purpose.

I subscribed for a while, but dropped it as most of the posting seemed very shallow to me.

Oh I never posted there. I don't recall how I got hold of a link for it. I read through some of the discussions/exchanges there, that's all. I started posting in October 1999 on lds-mormon.com, which was one of two forums hosted by 2think.org owned and operated by rpcman, Al Case, then owned and operated by the posters with a volunteer admin. So 1999. I think that counts as going "pretty far back" all things considered.

That was my first stop. I was inactive and had my own watered down version of Mormonism I stuck with. I started posting on that board to defend baptism actually. Then I turned around and tried to argue against evolution and got my ass kicked. As I started accepting evolution it was pretty much lights out.

I can't tell if you're referring to 2think. If so, I probably got my ass handed to me on a regular basis in the beginning, but I was too clueless at the time to realize it, so I pressed on. All true.

So, I'm watching the interview right now. And they touch momentarily on 'relevance' vis a vis Mormon topics on the Internet. It's actually a pretty interesting point, because r/exmormon is arguably the most relevant aggregator for Mormon-related material on the Internet, or at least it's the modern-day Expositor.

Still, though. It can't possibly fulfill the need for thorough examination of Mormonism. It's the ADD equivalent of the Mormon blogosphere, more or less, and while it's effective and bringing together quick snapshots of the Mormon experience I don't think it can effectively flesh out Mormonism to any degree because the firehose of information is on constant fullt tilt. This is why a site like this is so necessary because there has to be a niche for the thorough examination of Mormon philosophy, ideology, dogma, politics, so on and so forth. To use CB's term, limitable, the r/exmormon forum definitely serves its purpose on a quick, efficient, limited basis and that's a very good and healthy way to have the discussion for the majority of people who fall within the spectrum of Mormonism.

Yes. I am happy for the different fora out there with their unique approaches and varied participants. Really, I am thankful that I have an online home where I can be a Mormon in my own way.

I am relatively new to the forums. I have heard a lot about all the different sites, some that are still present and others that are defunct. Is there a place where the timeline of boards, listserves, sites and the key people involved is discussed? Is there someone on this board who has been around long enough to write about that? I am interested in how the online activity formed.

I'm not entirely sure but I think Mormon Curtain had just such a list, perhaps RFM as well?
