Salt Lake Tribune tells Orrin Hatch to leave

Post by _MeDotOrg »

The Salt Lake Tribune named Orrin Hatch their Utahn of the Year, with the important criteria that the person who had the most impact, 'for good or ill'.

The Trib did not select Senator Hatch for good. In a scathing editorial he was slammed for his "utter lack of integrity that rises from his unquenchable thirst for power".

Senator Hatch responded to the announcement that he was the Trib's Utahn of the Year. He tweeted a picture of the front page and called it "a great Christmas honor'.

He always has had a sarcastic wit.

His "lust for power" is no less than the Trib's lust to be the Washington Post.

He is hardly known for sarcastic wit. But, he did used to have a soul. The moment he saw Senator Bennett get primaried by a tea party insurrection, he seems to have realized he'd have to make a choice between keeping his seat or his soul. What he chose has not been lost on the Trib.

I hope when I reach near his age I do not become a cranky old fart like him. What did it for me was the scene where he interrupted that Democratic senator.

Read the editorial...meh.
The ending was laughable, because the writer obviously ignored the magnitude of what Hatch has achieved by sticking around.

True, Sub: and RL politics do not conform with our most idealistic notions. I voted to "Bring Orrin Home". I voted to oust him in every election since his first two terms, since he said "two terms is enough". But RL produces choices that require some real thought. And the situation "on the ground" for quite a while makes Orrin Hatch in the Senate a good thing for America, despite his flaws and backpedaling on promises, a.k.a. lies, of course. It would be nice if had not said some things. But there is no question in my mind that he is very effective at securing needed legislation and defending the US from domestic enemies who are far worse than he is. (Yes, I consider career politicians "enemies" of a sort, and I hope to see the day when reform puts a stop to career politicians on the Fed level.)

Senator Hatch's main argument for being elected in the first place was that Senator Frank Moss's three terms were enough and that fresh blood was needed. After Senator Hatch's first year he was dubbed "the most disliked man in the Senate" by his colleagues. Fortunately, he was befriended by Senator Ted Kennedy.
