The only problem I see with CNN is that it doesn't talk about some of the issues I care about.
CNN reports are mostly accurate, CNN is not highly misleading.

Good morning MeDot!

MeDotOrg wrote:We used to have something called the Fairness Doctrine:

The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was—in the Commission's view—honest, equitable, and balanced. The FCC eliminated the policy in 1987 and removed the rule that implemented the policy from the Federal Register in August 2011

Interesting. I had never heard of the Fairness Doctrine.

The fault lies not in the stars, but in ourselves.

Cable news networks cater to ratings. Conservatives don't want their news contaminated with liberal opinions. Ditto Liberal news with conservative opinions. News is reported, not to be fair, but to build a loyal viewership. And most viewers don't like to be challenged.

So what do we do? Bring back the Fairness Doctrine? The real danger is not the news you hear on CNN, Fox or MSNBC, it's the fact that you have to change channels to hear opposing points of view.

As is often the case, your posts are thought provoking. Good stuff, MeDot!

Peace,

While I think CNN is biased, perhaps you could show that CNN doesn't get the facts right on a regular basis.

The huge difference between FOX and the other two is that FOX regularly relies on the worst sources, sometimes conspiracy minded sources like Alex Jones, and when they're busted they typically don't acknowledge, retract or apologize. Though that have a few times. Half of the time CNN is busted for getting something wrong, it is only known because CNN caught the error themselves and reported on it, retracted and apologized.

CNN has all sorts of problems with bad journalism. Probably most importantly, it's far too obsessed with tabloid topics and it covers politics obsessively, but does so like it is a sport.

CNN isn't even in the ballpark of Fox New's problems though. Fox news routinely fails to rise above crude propaganda. It consistently reports with misleading information and focus to draw its readers to wrong conclusions that favor conservative ideologues and Republican politicians. Fox, and right wing media in general, is probably one of the biggest problems with America today. It's why we got the presidential Administration we do.

I would agree with DT that America's blithe attitude towards climate change is probably a top 3 problem with the country at the moment. We're speeding towards an ecological disaster and it feels like the country is asleep at the wheel.

MSNBC and CNN are simply news stations that have altered their format in order to compete with Fox and the tabloids.

Fox is a frequent manipulator of information and purveyor of misinformation. None of these TV channels represent the biggest problems in America.

The Fox News Channel started as a venue that was dishonest enough to perpetually portray Republican politics in a positive light. They are now essentially the media wing of the Republican Party, as well as a lobbyist for the party's increasing shift to right-wing positions.
