Military vet who lost her legs blasts Trump:

Tammy Duckworth Scorches Donald Trump As ‘Five-Deferment Draft Dodger’

Donald Trump tweeted on Saturday that Democrats were to blame for the shutdown of the federal government, claiming the party was “holding our military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration.”

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) was not having any of it.

Duckworth, an Army veteran who lost both her legs in the line of duty, minced no words on the Senate floor as she lambasted the president’s tweet on Saturday. Calling him a “five-deferment draft dodger,” Duckworth described Trump’s comments as the “latest example of him failing to show leadership to take responsibility for leading this nation.”

“Does he even know that there are service members who are in harm’s way right now, watching him, looking for their commander in chief to show leadership, rather than to try to deflect blame?” Duckworth asked. “Or that his own Pentagon says that ... the short-term funding plans he seems intent on pushing is (sic) actually harmful to not just the military, but to our national security?”

“I spent my entire adult life looking out for the well-being, the training, the equipping of the troops for whom I was responsible,” she continued. “Sadly, this is something the current occupant of the Oval Office does not seem to care to do, and I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five-deferment draft dodger.”

The senator ― a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who served in the Iraq War ― went on to criticize Trump for his “baiting” of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“I have a message for Cadet Bone Spurs: if you cared about our military, you’d stop baiting [Kim] into a war that could put 85,000 American troops and millions of innocent civilians in danger,” Duckworth said. She added that if Trump “truly cared” about servicemen and women, he’d “stop hiding behind his Twitter account, stop blaming everyone else, and tell his party ... to do their job.”

Duckworth has referred to Trump as “Cadet Bone Spurs” in the past — a reference to the medical reason Trump cited to avoid the draft for the Vietnam War.

In her speech, the senator urged her colleagues to work together to get to a full budget, saying lawmakers should follow in the footsteps of “our troops.”

“We can compromise. We can do this together,” she said. “Our troops know how to work together. They stand shoulder to shoulder when they protect and defend this country. We surely, in these chambers, can do the same. Let’s stop blaming each other and let’s get to work.”

I forget — where did Obama serve? No wait, it was his signature program where we discovered how the Vetrans administration really treated vets!!!

Also, this is same Tammy Duckworth who voted to shut down military service peoples’ pay on Friday while she has no shame receiving her govt paycheck. Yeah she’s a real Poster Woman for Hypocrisy!

We haven't elected a vet to the highest office since George H.W. Bush in '88, and a vet hasn't won their party's nomination since McCain in '08. Neither party views actual military service as necessary to serve as commander-in-chief anymore but while both give lip service to military service the Republican party makes it into a state religion.

by the way, I seem to recall asking about your service and didn't get much back. Not that I think it's some form of necessary right-of-passage in a Robert Heinlein sort of way. It just seems hypocritical when this kind of criticism comes from people like you and the current President.

See? You prove how utterly despicable of a person you really are, but it is par for the course as a Trumpster. First you intentionally miss the point about dodging service, then you lie about Obama's "signature program," ignore the fact that lack of funding for the VA was the problem (created by the GOP), and then you are quick to dishonor a military vet simply because she's a minority, woman, Democrat, proving how little you really respect military personnel. Their opinions and sacrifices only matter to you if you can use them as political pawns.

JUST IN: Group of Senate Democrats introduce bill to withhold congressional pay during government shutdown:

“If members of Congress can’t figure this out and keep the government open, then none of us should get paid.”

Funny you should mention Hypocrisy....

REPUBLICAN TAX PLAN: MITCH MCCONNELL SAID NO BILLS SHOULD PASS WITHOUT BIPARTISAN SUPPORT

The Republican tax cut bill expected to pass on Tuesday "isn’t such a great idea"—at least according to the Republican who is spearheading its passage.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said three years ago that any bill that lacks true bipartisan support does not reflect "the will of the country" and should not be passed.

Of course, he was talking about Obamacare, not the $1.5-trillion GOP tax cut bill moving at full speed towards passage this week with not a single "yea" vote from the 193 Democrats in the House or 46 Democrats in the Senate. In 2014, years after President Obama's Affordable Care Act was signed, McConnell wrote some words that could be taken as a condemnation of his own party's actions this week:

The chaos [Obamacare] has visited on our country isn’t just deeply tragic, it was entirely predictable. And that will always be the case if you approach legislation without regard for the views of the other side. Without some meaningful buy-in, you guarantee a food fight. You guarantee instability and strife. It may very well have been the case that on Obamacare, the will of the country was not to pass the bill at all. That’s what I would have concluded if Republicans couldn’t get a single Democrat vote for legislation of this magnitude. I’d have thought, maybe this isn’t such a great idea.

Democrats have repeatedly said that they’ve been left out of the crafting and debate over the tax bill, which was largely written in private. “This Congress doesn’t work for working families. It works for corporate lobbyists and campaign donors in backroom deals and 1:30 AM votes,” wrote Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).
