Trump tried to fire Mueller in June

Post by _Jersey Girl »

I just now got my hands on this story.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/25/politics ... index.html

Not being the sharpest tool in the political tool shed around here, I have a question.

If Trump fired Comey and then, tried to fire Mueller...can both events be viewed as obstruction of justice/attempt to obstruct justice and if so...can Trump be charged on this?

It would be hard to charge Trump with anything in the sense you are referring to. It's about as brightline of an example of a reason you impeach a president as can possibly exist, but that's a parallel process.

The timing of this leak is interesting as its happening at the exact same time that Republicans in Congress are increasingly bold about weaving dishonest conspiracy theories to discredit the leadership of the FBI.

He can’t be charged, because the president cannot be criminally prosecuted for acts taken as president. The only thing we’re talking about is impeachment, which is discretionary by Congress.

The main relevance of this story is that it is pretty dramatic evidence of intent to obstruct justice.

He can't? If he outright took a gun out of his desk drawer and shot someone to death (no self defense involved) could he not be charged and prosecuted for murder?

I believe that shooting someone would not be considered an action taken “as president.”

Well. Obama killed an American citizen (or two) without due process so....

Good luck prosecuting him.
