It has certainly been amusing to see Republicans in general, and conservatives in particular, equivocate so thoroughly on this matter and prove that they really had no principled or moral concern about it at all. And as long as they can deflect, then they can ignore ever needing to demonstrate that they are any better than their perceived opponents.

That this is occurring while the economy is in year 8 of an economic recovery with strong tax receipts is foreboding if you at all care about deficit spending.
Perhaps I'm cynical, but given reporting that the tax cuts would be followed by the GOP making up the lost revenue through cuts to so-called entitlement programs this just seems like someone setting the board to position voters into embracing cuts to programs that benefit the less privileged and average Joe types (i.e. - most Trump voters). Because tax breaks for corporations and bracket changes that benefit the wealthiest in our Country the most are that important.
ETA: I don't know how the progressive wing of the Democratic party can find a high road on this issue that really makes a difference, either. Military spending is as entrenched a partisan issue as exists, and is also inextricably intertwined with economics and jobs in areas where government employment is the majority employer. That seems to be the only real area where the tax cut deficits could be meaningfully offset elsewhere in the budget. Additional, more progressive tax code changes aren't happening in the next three years. It looks like a savvy if terrible political maneuver to me.

We're on the cusp of also now passing a massive spending increase that actually exceeds the stimulus passed in the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. This is occurring in the middle of a hot economy. The level of fiscal irresponsibility and total hypocrisy is beyond words.
There's not even a pretense to governing well. It's a smash and grab party.
