A commemorative coin designed to honor President Trump’s “peace summit” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was selling for a discounted rate Thursday afternoon.
The collectible was originally available for $24.95 plus shipping through the White House gift shop, but a few dollars were knocked off the price shortly after Trump canceled the event the coins were minted to recognize.
I imagine the White House will now send the commemorative coin of the Trump Nobel Peace Prize back to the smelter.
The website said that orders for the coins would be fulfilled, whether or not the summit takes place.

Such a coin may someday hold more value than the Nixon's the One button.
One can only hope.

If the summit doesn't take place, the value of these coins will shoot through the roof.
If the U.S. and North Korea go to war--heaven forbid--the value of these coins will be be utterly astronomical.

That’s excellent. After the apocalypse, we can use these as currency! What an awesome daily reminder this will then be of our fateful decision to elect Trump.
Regarding the coins, for any who might be toying with the idea of snatching up a bunch of them for investment purposes.
For what little worth an amateur numismatist's opinion might be worth...
These things might sell for a decent premium after minting halts and the novelty is still fresh, but I wouldn't be surprised if these end up in the bulk token bin at coin shops down the road like most commemorative coins. Especially since these aren't Ag or Au.
The majority of collectors, when faced with the decision to buy something like this, or for the same price get a 19th century Barber repousse coin from the World’s Fair** -- I doubt they’ll go for the chintzy coin with a rather tenuous historical relevance.
These types of things tend to have pretty short novelty peaks. A quasi-good example would be the NORFED rounds. After they were flagged as counterfeit currency by the SS, and the maker was labeled a domestic terrorist there was a robust market for them for about a year. I sold a few for over $150 each (spot price at the time was probably $19). Now, they can be picked up for only a modest premium above spot price.
**ETA I just looked up the current prices for Barber repousse coins, and either my memory sucks, or they have gone up a bit in price. Either way, it turns out it was a crap example on my part.

I think of the medal like the Super Bowl T-shirts they print in advance for both teams. The T-shirts for the losing teams get sent to Third World countries. It's a monument to an achievement that never happened.
