Now here is a shocker... not.

Fox News downplays Roseanne 's Tweets

Of course they find their black conservative and put her on the air to say it, of course:

“I don’t understand it to be anything other than free speech,” said Outnumbered Overtime host Harris Faulkner. “…It is extremely offensive but it is just that. She says in one of her tweets, there were three rapid-fire today…’It was a joke. It was a miscalculated joke.'” Guest and GOP strategist Noelle Nikpour agreed. “She is a comedian,” she said. “She does have a very wicked, twisted sense of humor. Everybody knows her to be a little raunchy and a little rough.”

Funny how "being a comedian" was not a good excuse when FOX had conniption fits over Michelle Wolf's roast at the correspondent's dinner.

She did issue an apology, so I don't know if that should have sufficed or not. One thing I'm happy for is that folks who are grossly out of line are getting hit where it hurts. In their bank accounts.
Seconded. The only part I feel bad about in this is for the other cast and crew (Goodman aside) who just lost their gig over this. I know there is some "dance with the devil" kind of mentality about it but sometimes you just take the job you can get and it kinda sucks to have lost it for some bad behavior.

Edit: Bad behavior is not really strongly worded enough, the sentence should probably read "to have lost it because your coworkers is a loud mouthed bigot."

Yeah you know what, she's not a very smart person. I recall watching an interview with her about the reboot where she expressed how pleased she was about having a mixed race granddaughter character on the show.

She just proved how ignorant she is. Disney is the parent CO of ABC? Yeah, a comment like that is gonna fly with Disney at the helm.

I really like that they are using money as the weapon of consequence. Racism shouldn't be rewarded.

I've watched a few different people talk about this issue now, and one recurring theme seems to be, why didn't ABC see this coming?

It's a fair question, but it's the wrong thing on which to focus. Maybe they wanted to give her a chance to redeem herself, knowing that if she stepped out of line again, they'd be willing to pull the plug quickly, no matter how successful the show was.

Given its actual success and affect on ABC's bottom line, I think it's better to focus on ABC doing the right thing in spite of how much they'll lose, rather than ABC doing the wrong thing by hiring her in the first place. They gave her a chance. She failed.

OK, so I'm not really so Pollyanna about ABC's intentions here, but credit is deserved more than condemnation, in my opinion.

It would be hard to carry on Roseanne without Roseanne. The part that was bittersweet for ABC/Disney was losing a show with good ratings.

True, but at this exact point in time they had a show for which it would have been difficult to find sponsors. Anyone advertising on her show going forward would have been subject to some large and angry consumer boycotts.

There has been talk about Fox or a smaller network picking up the show, and from a potential ratings prospect it would be tempting. Byt the reality is that Roseanne has constantly used her social media account to promote debunked conspiracies and racist barbs for years. She had also promised to leave Twitter before, but came back again. The Girl can't help it.

I think ABC gets credit on both ends. Credit for giving Barr the opportunity, remember she wanted the show to be an avenue to show that not all Trump supporters are ignorant, racist, deplorables (bang up job on that by the way, Roseanne), that was a pretty good win for free speech and trying to open up a conversation between sides.

But, as you say, they also get credit for how quickly they reacted in shutting it down, despite the show being a popular one for them. And they did it within hours of the tweet going out, when you compare this to the pretty tepid responses from the likes of Netflix following the revelations of Kevin Spacey and Danny Masterson ABC is looking pretty on top of it. It seems obvious they had the plan for if Roseanne ever did jump the shark.

I've seen it floated to go with the 2 and half Men approach, just let a billionaire played by a ridiculous comedic relief buy up the property but let the family stay because he feels bad because their crazy ol' mom/wife/grandma just passed. Sure it is a really trite way to try to continue a popular series despite losing your marquee star, but what's a studio to do?

She has tweeted out that she is not a racist just an idiot and that the tweet was a result of being on sleeping pills.

In a counter tweet, the makers of Ambien have stated that they know of no known racist side effects attributable to their product.
