You're missing the point. Ajax18 is well aware that once science, technology and medicine have developed enough, more and more people make the happy discovery that whether or not they do stuff intended to attract the attention of a deity, or to tell him how wonderful he is, makes no difference to what happens to them.
The result is that the deity in question, if he exists, become royally pissed at getting ignored. He then smites us all with sore boils in the hinder parts, death of all the firstborn, or whatever takes his fancy, just to make us take notice.
