Marxist thought is so tied to Stalinism and other 20th Century forms of communism that it prevents people considering the essential philosophical ideas Marx presented in Das Kapital might not be the same thing as government-controlled industry. But I believe the underlying ideas behind Marx's ultimate conclusions are more than the -ism game we usually see played out around it. If one steps back to consider them first as a way of understanding human history and power dynamics, I think most people would agree they reflect truths we can then build from to understand the present better and imagine a worthy future. And those need not be any of the -isms that short-circuit the discussion currently.
