They did but the times they are a changing. If Hill were to give the exact same testimony now the public opinion might shake out a bit different (for right or wrong). I think Kavanaugh's relative performance in polling points to those changing times. Of course public opinion isn't really all that critical a factor for this confirmation. It takes something as toxic as Roy Moore's to cut through partisan desires.
