That's interesting, EA.

I always did well on tests too, but I'm good at studying what I need to know for any given exam. If I had to retake my college exams today, I'd likely fail because I retained what I needed to only long enough to get passing grades (unless it was a subject I really liked/cared about). It always felt to me like a bit of a scam (that worked in my favor).

I guess as I got older, I thought having to do the work to turn in an assignment was more valuable than memorizing facts for an exam. I thought the learning that happened in the process of working through an assignment was more valuable than the finished product. I never really cared about grades (but was an honor student anyway). I cared about finishing the courses.

Of course, not all homework assignments are equal. I suppose YMMV.

I agree with you on this. What was your undergraduate degree? You seem to think more like an engineer. It's hard for me to just memorize random facts, though this is what often happens when you're trying to pass a board exam in medicine. I need to see the whole picture and make connections to what I already know.

I tend to think this is the only way anyone ever truly learns (and retains) anything. It's about context.

This is why it's important to get your premises right, because if they're wrong, everything you learn going forward is filtered through and contextualized with BS.
