Would it have been better to have drawn the median income in Manhattan or rural Alabama? I was looking at houses in Alabama the other day, and I can buy a near mansion on a waterfront property in Alabama for the cost of my modest house. Of course, then I'd have to live in Alabama, so I'm not eager to sell my house and move there. I can only imagine what I could do if I owned the equivalent of my house in San Francisco.

Alabama hands down. Were it not for a couple of PCS moves that changed our direction, we'd have stayed there. Real estate is affordable as well as property taxes.

Taxes back East are off the charts compared to where we live now and what we have to show for it. We pay 1/10 of what our relatives do in property taxes alone.

But there's no suggested theory for how the two are related. If the article is suggesting that poor states could become richer by voting in Democrat legislatures, what is the mechanism for that?
