I thought Trump was a pro-Jew kind of guy? He's moving the US embassy to Jerusalem which sent quite a few Jews into a sort of euphoria:



I think US Jews were less subdued, but I suppose that has more to do with political affinity than whether or not Trump hates da Joos.

The American Right's relationship with Judaism has always been fascinating to me. On the one hand, Republicans are the most enthusiastically pro-Israel party, and the Christian Right makes a big deal out of supporting the Jews. On the other hand, the reason they do so is based on their own bizarre eschatology in which Israel and the Jews are necessary for Christ's return, which will ultimately send all the Jews who fail to convert to Christianity to roast in the lake of fire with the rest of us godless heathens. If I were Jewish, I would ambivalent in the extreme about this kind of 'love.'

And now Trump is dipping quite openly into that subset of the Right which verges into outright Neo-Nazism, and as shown above Republicans are becoming much more bold about dipping into open anti-semitic imagery when it comes to Jews like George Soros. I've seen Neo-Nazi propaganda videos that would have suited Goebbels quite well, created to support Trump, a man who has continued the enthusiastic pro-Israel policies and whose daughter converted to Judaism so she could marry a Jew. It's all very strange.

Me grappling with the historical circumstances that led us to a place where Republicans have both staunch pro-Israel people and hardcore anti-Semites under the same government:

Conservative Christians in America used to be virulently anti-Semitic as a group. But then the state of Israel was founded and his set off an end-times prophecy frenzy that led to an intense desire to defend the existence of Israel. Couple this with the horrors of the holocaust and the bulk of conservative Christians went from anti-Semetic to friendly to Jews and rabidly pro-Israel. The ever popular phrase "Judeo-Christian" evangelicals love to use to refer to "Christian" would've been unheard of as a part of evangelical culture circa 1920.

The thing is, the anti-Semetic elements didn't disappear entirely. They've always been there. Their size and influence just waned. But with the rise of the alt-right, over ethics in gaming journalism mostly I hear, it sure as hell feels like they are gaining ground back.

My reference to gamergate was meant to be cheeky, but I still can't get my head around how utterly bizarre it is that gamergate was a major factor in a resurgence of the worst kinds of bigotry, but if you look at the academic analysis, it totally was. Part of that has been a cross-pollination between various bigoted groups with anti-semitism spreading outward. We live in such weird times. Anyway, Trump both embraces hardline Zionism and shares anti-Semitic memes and conspiracy theories. When you think of the mish-mash of views within the right-wing coalition, this makes a sort of twisted sense, but it does make you want to cock your eyebrow. Dude's a horror-show.

Total Shot: 197
Total Homicides: 45

What do you make of the fact that, "What about the violence in Chicago?!" was a also a common response to focus on terrorism aimed at blacks during the civil rights movement by its opponents?

There's a reason why spree killings motivated by prejudice draw national focus while daily murders in one specific city tend not to.

That, with what preceded it, was an effective reply. which is no doubt why the post in response was an excursion into whataboutery of the usual kind.

This is a thread about the killings in Pittsburgh by perpetrated by someone who thinks that Jews are dangerous people who need to be kept out of the USA.* And not long before we had Donald Trump joining in a 'lock him up!' chant about George Soros.

*By the way, how long before Water Dog tells us that this 'kinda sounds like' this guy was really a false flag deep state operative, and the supposed victims were all 'crisis actors' playing dead?
