No, but if you are hit by an asteroid I would imagine the chances of being killed by it are quite high.

Yep. One astronomer calculated the odds based on the inventory of known objects that cross earth’s orbit. He put the odds at one in 700,000.

Case dismissed.

But it may be the case that no one on planet Earth has died from an asteroid strike in the last 100 years. Today you are more likely to win the jackpot than you are getting killed by an asteroid strike, unless there is a big asteroid that we haven't detected on it's way to hit the Earth. CNN should clarify what it means.

Lindley Johnson, NASA’s planetary defense officer, said in an email that a death by meteorite impact was so rare that one has never been scientifically confirmed in recorded history. “There have been reports of injuries, but even those were extremely rare before the Chelyabinsk event three years ago,” he said, referring to a 2013 episode in Russia.

and that is about 1 in 10 billion at any given day. Megamillions should sue CNN for being misleading.

The video says that your chances of being struck by lightning are one in 960k, which is not true if CNN is talking about a lifetime.

You keep trying to change what CNN actually said: They didn't say "your odds of dying in an asteroid strike today" They referred to the odds of you dying in an asteroid strike. Full stop.

You went off on CNN because you didn't take the time to understand what they were claiming. You still owe CNN that apology.

Yep, they used the stat for getting hit by lightning in a year. Lifetime would be about one in 12,000.

Look, what your missing is that "dying in an asteroid strike" implies lifetime risk because the asteroid kills you.

If you really want to bitch about CNN's little puff piece on the lottery, bitch that they didn't specify that their odds for getting struck by lightning were really "annual" odds of getting struck by lightning.
