Q: Didn't Trump say at one point that he wanted to pay for the wall out of the defense budget and let the military build it or am I misremembering that altogether?

And if so, is pulling out of Syria freeing up funds?

This is much easier said than done, due to how appropriations and budgets work.

Stranger still is how the Base might accept this diversion of military funds after Trump’s bombastic statements about Mexico funding it.

Someone needs to hold a bake sale. I want to see who lines up to start throwing their money at this thing.

There's a Go Fund Me for the wall presumably started by veterans with something on the order of 4-5M in it already.

Yup. And the more the US is seen to do that, the more difficult it will get to safeguard its huge network of economic interests worldwide in the long run. And damage to those interests will make all Americans poorer.

Sometimes people talk as if the main purpose of the military was to defend the continental US against threats of attack and conquest. It is, rather, to make sure that nobody ever gets within 1% of thinking that might be a practical possibility.

And the only way to do that is to be prepared to project power into places where your rivals would prefer to dominate instead, thereby showing too that the US is likely to prove a better friend than the alternatives, as well as being ready to protect its interests (which renders them less likely to need protecting, of course).

If you don't want your sons and daughters to be involved in that kind of thing, then suggest other careers than the armed forces. The draft ceased long ago.

ISIS may be a bunch of fanatical idealogues, but while a wall and troops might be an effective deterrent to Pancho Villa, I think ISIS might be able to try other ports of entry into the United States.

The idea that stopping ISIS as being synonymous with border security is not looking at the entire food chain of terrorism. Bailing out of Syria, allowing the Turks to go after the Kurds, and withdrawing opposition to those forces loyal to Assad and the Russians will make the area a safe haven for those who would attack the United States. Not today and not tomorrow, but probably within a few years.

And they won't be stopped at the border. This is what I don't think Trump understands about international engagement. It is is the long term best interests of the United States. Trump's short term transactional thinking does not appreciate the wisdom of long term strategic engagement. He comes up with ideas like giving South Korea and Saudi Arabia nuclear weapons: Here. Have some nukes. Now go play nice. What could possibly go wrong?

Trump's transactional model of foreign relations will lead to a far more mercurial and dangerous world.

This is fascinating. War mongering liberals? Who would have thought? Protecting economic interests? check. Proxy fighting in some third world crap hole? check. Lining the pockets of the evil Halliburton's of the world? check. Losing american boys and girls because, what the hell, they signed up for it. check. Funny how just because Trump proposed it, people do a 180. Amazing.

I don't give a crap why Trump wants out a Syria. I'm just glad if our troops come home.

I don't think we should let the feels rule our thinking on this and I say that as a decades long military wife who knows from post deployment homecomings.

If the situation isn't handled properly (and it's not) our troops are coming home fast...only to have to deploy once again to go back and essentially start all over again.

The job isn't done. They'll go back. It's wrongheaded to think otherwise.

It’s a start. Just 99.999% more to go for this first payment on the first part.
