I remember when I was a teenager and my ward went to do baptisms for the dead. When we were all getting our baptism-for-the-dead-only temple recommends, the stake president went to great lengths to tell us how special the temple was. He explained how a third of the host of heaven--tens of billions at least--of evil spirits were lurking all over the planet tempting us to do evil things. In fact, untold numbers of those evil spirits were probably in that very chapel that day. But there were magic force fields around the temple that prevented evil spirits from going in. It was the only place on the planet with such protection. The only place we could get a rest from evil spirits and be safe.
It ended up being a big group that went--we were probably close to 100 teenagers crammed in the waiting room with our shoes off. The smell of dirty teenager socks was awful--even for me. It was hot and the wait to get our turn to the locker room to change and then into the font was long. I was trying to be reverent and take in the mysticism of it all. We each did about 15 names. I wondered if it was even more crowded on the spirit side of the veil; were there 1,500 spirits there, waiting to be in the water with us when we took their name?
But it was so crowded and slow and stinky, some of the kids got a bit frustrated with the wait. One of the boys made some sort of joking insult to another, and the other one flipped off the first. In the temple!!! Several kids gasped. Others giggled. I couldn't believe it--how could something so sinful be permitted in such a sacred space? And how come the spirit couldn't do just a little bit about the smell?
That's the whole story. It was just another few strands of my Mormon cognitive dissonance. I have no idea if Mormon kids still hear the same kind of stories and are still hit with the same cognitive dissonance. But now they have to wonder how could God possibly allow somebody like Mike Norton into His house??? Going in there to perform sins that are next to murder in seriousness just emphasizes the point.
It reminds me of another story--back in the day, Richard Packham got into a big Internet debate with some young priesthood holder who warned him that if he didn't repent of his lies about the Church that he'd be forced to use his priesthood powers to silence him, just like Alma silenced Korihor. Packham mocked him and begged him to do it. The poor kid tried, and you can use your own imagination about how well that worked out.
I don't condone what Norton is proposing here. Not at all. But I'm not that offended by it either. I don't really care what Mormons think about the exMormon community in general, much less what they think about Mike Norton. Mormons will be mortified about it. But the ones who take it too literally will be forced to ask themselves how God allowed such a thing to happen. Contemplating that question is a good thing.

Previous in the thread, I mentioned that sex scenes can be incorporated within the temple film footage already secured by Norton. Cut and past porn material into the temple scenes (No violence, No rape, 18+). So, shot "inside" a Mormon temple may be layered in meaning.

I'm perfectly okay with that inside a porn flick depicting the Mormon temple. But if it includes vandalism and destruction of property then I'm not okay with that. I am not advocating blowing up temples or pooping on the carpets. Both are acts of violence in various degree.

Won't this allow the perpetrator church to play the victim? The cojcolds leadership is just itching for a chance to flip the script and complain of persecution. Norton's porn suggestion seems to be playing into this. I can just hear Scott Lloyd and others trying to include all exmos with Norton, too. Perhaps Norton should give this idea a rest?
