So why didn't they? Or more specifically, why didn't Trump get this done while he had control of both houses of Congress.
because chaos as a business strategy was very successful* for Trump and chaos as a political strategy has been equally as successful.
*please, spare me any sort of short list of Trump business dealings or bankruptcies because statistically speaking having 10 business fail while maintaining ownership, board positions, and interest in 500 other companies does not constitute failure.

That could be a winning slogan for 2020. Beats "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too".
It's short, it's snappy, and it expresses the essence of the candidate. What's not to like?

I just want it noted that the Leftist Loonies on this board are ok with hundreds of thousands of women and minorities being put out of work because the Democrats don't want to give Trump his money. This is racism and misogyny, pure and simple. Knowing the Wall won't stop illegal immigration really underscores this point, that they're willing to take away money from women and minorities as a political bargaining chip.

Re: Trump's "Non-Starter"
Odd to equate not being willing to set a precedent that lets Trump terrorize the Country through threatening government shutdowns rather than demonstrating the value of his proposals is, and I quote, "ok with hundreds of thousands of women and minorities being put out of work".
The bigger question is if the use of identity politics is just trolling, or a symptom of something much deeper that bubbles up when you want to tell Democrats Trump being Trump is actually their fault. This being just another version of the same argument. "If only Democrats didn't express values that triggered some people's racism and misogyny, Trump wouldn't have beat Clinton." Or something.

Re: Trump's "Non-Starter"
I think it's bizarre no one here is wondering why the Left, or the Democrats in this case, think it's ok to not give Trump money for a wall that they don't believe will work, can't get built anyway, and is a drop in the bucket for the overall budget. Weird how scoring political points is more important than putting women and minorities back to work protecting our country, running our national parks, and serving a vital role in our national repjtation.

Except that the case for "why" you don't cave in here has been laid out quite plainly. The precedent it sets is too high a cost. RI said it best back on page one:
Res Ipsa wrote:First, they’ve staked out a position that it’s wrong for the president to shut the government down in order to get something he is unable to get through the normal political process. It’s a position with merit and appeal. If a president can do this anytime to get his way, we look more like a dictatorship than a democracy.

Re: Trump's "Non-Starter"
Scoring political points v. fundamentally damaging the balance of powers between the various bodies of government is tough to call. Man, if only democracy came with a user manual.
Next you'll be wondering why Democrats don't give up the pointless Russia investigation and focus on giving free tuition and healthcare to everyone because it's as easy as typing it out to make sure everything in the world is fair...oh, wait. You're on the other side of that one. Anywho...
