"Research is Not the Answer"

Post by _consiglieri »

A new Radio Free Mormon podcast went up yesterday dealing with my personal response to Elder Oaks's comment to the young marrieds of Chicago.

https://mormondiscussionpodcast.org/201 ... he-answer/

I hope you like it.

I go into some more personal stuff about my journey in the church than I normally do, and try to process why it is this comment by Elder Oaks troubled me.

All the Best!

Radio Free Mormon: 056: Research Is Not The Answer

Good job. And yes, people want to continue to hear what you have to say. Another 40 years? That's pushing it.

The way you wear your hat, the way you sip your tea . . . .

For some reason, I incorrectly titled this "Faith is Not the Answer."

The quote is, "Research is Not the Answer."

Corrected.

I must admit. I sat there looking at it. Maybe you had too much tea.

There were a few of us that were cursed with the affliction RFM describes in this pod cast. It was the downfall of many of us, cursed believing and thirsting after more and deeper doctrine, now relinquished to nuanced Mormonism being the only possible hope for anything spiritual out of Mormonism.

The event horizon of the memory hole approaches for us consig.

It's funny, as a child I was always told I was asking the wrong questions. As a teenager I responded to my bishop's statement of how I lucky I was to be born into my family with ""How do you know I didn't argue and lose?" On my mission I was told I didn't need to know what was in the book in my mission president's office on Masonry and Mormonism. At BYU I pissed off a Book of Mormon religion professor with questions about the ridiculous population numbers in the Book of Mormon. It took me a while to realize it wasn't me asking the wrong questions that was the problem, it was other people who didn't have the right answers so they tried to shift the blame to me for their ignorance.

Mormonism is this big beautiful shallow lake that looks great until you try diving into it.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

Quite apt. The sign says "Endless Deepity" but if you break your neck diving, it's your fault.

If you polled the entire faculty and student body of the Harvard Divinity School (excepting faculty member Dr. David Holland, who is believing LDS, in fact I think he is a serving s.p.) — if you polled the entire faculty and student body, how many do you think would say they believe in the divinity of Christ and the Resurrection? Probably not many.

This is the result of “research”, and it is all Pres. Oaks is saying when he says “research is not the answer.” The scriptures teach us to learn by “study [or research] and faith”. When we combine both, not privileging one over the other, we achieve a proper balance and perspective.
