Perfume: The very first J-Pop group to perform at Coachella!

Post by _Dr. Shades »

Dear fellow Perfumaniacs:

Our favorite (and official) Japanese electro-pop group, PERFUME, is about to make history as the very first J-Pop group to perform at the prestigious Coachella music festival in Indio, California. They'll be performing both weekends, specifically on April 14 and April 21.

For all the details, see:

(Although not related to Coachella,) even Forbes got in on the action by interviewing Perfume on New Year's Eve:

"Perfume Is the Global Future of J-Pop" --Papermag

Papermag.com just ran a very impressive--and complimentary--story on our favorite J-Pop group. I think they captured the spirit of Perfume quite well. Read for yourself:

Proper toothbrushing technique--courtesy of Perfume

Post by _Dr. Shades »

Our favorite, and official, Japanese Electro-Pop group, Perfume, just made us like them even more by proving that they're not too good, or elitist, to avoid lending their voices to a children's show when it serves the greater good.

The following link is to a video compilation of three acts they did. The first and last include singing and dancing; you may ignore the middle one.

  • The first one, starting at 0:09, translates to "Computer Grandma" and is a cover of a much earlier children's song. I'll be damned if their dances aren't both cute and adorable.
  • The third one, starting at 3:57, is all about encouraging kids to brush their teeth. Their voices are in full effect as they sing about upper teeth, lower teeth, front teeth, and back teeth. Endearing as Hell.

Remember, 0:09 and 3:57 are the places to which to skip ahead:

ENJOY!! :-)

I've always thought that one of the great moral failings of J-pop has been the total disregard of proper oral hygiene. Nice to see Perfume finally taking a stand.

Just one minor criticism, they should have shown brushing up and down. Other than that, yeah, they're cute af and def our fav in the genre. <3

Here's another song from their newest album. It hasn't been released as a single yet, so this is a sneak preview for y'all. So new is it that it's not even on YouTube yet (to my knowledge); this is very recent concert footage hosted on a streamable.com. Please give it a moment if you hear audio but don't see video; it may take a moment to kick in but it's there. Enjoy!

Also, a belated "Happy Birthday" to A-chan, who turned 30 last Friday. OOPS!

OH MY GOSH: The rarest of the rare just turned up on YouTube--a video from Perfume's first year in existence, back when Yuka Kawashima ("Kawayuka") was still in the band before dropping out and being replaced by Nocchi. (The other two original members, A-chan and Kashiyuka, are here.) They still hadn't formalized the spelling of the band's name.

It was only a local dance contest, so the music is a cover and thus won't be listed in the main page, but for some super nostalgia from our favorite Japanese electro-pop group's absolute earliest days, here you go. They were most likely only 11 at the time.

For someone who loves Perfume, this must be like the Dylan Basement Tapes. It is always fun to see an artist that you love when they were young, when you can see the first sparks of their talent.

By the way, what happened to Yuka Kawashima? Is she the Pete Best of Perfume?
