Those Book Deals...

Post by _subgenius »

The latest just-under-the-radar episode centers around a tradition among many politicians....the book/movie deal.
As I have made clear my penchant fro a good conspiracy story, I would like to expand on the recent Mayor Pugh resignation.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh resigned Thursday, apologizing for the harm she has caused to the city’s image amid a growing scandal over her sales of a self-published children’s book series.

This episode has brought to mind the lucrative book deals that many elected officials seem to get in the wake of being elected. And while I understand the timing and opportunity of "the publishing business", I can not help but notice the ability for these deals to appear as nefarious methods for getting money to a politican (whether for influence or greed).
So, am I just polishing my tin-foil hat, or could this "Pugh deal" just be peek behind the veil?

What exactly was this children's book scandal about?

This one looks bad, and it’s entirely fair to suspect that a little ‘consideration’ was expected by the parties involved.

Yeah, this book deal is odd...but it does bring to mind how often "book deals" occur among those with influence but without real stories to tell.

You realize that she was writing children’s books, right?

No reason to bring up any of Trump’s ghost-written junk here.

Yes, and the bar for a "childrens book" is set how high? Obama height? (as in the the justification for "of thee i sing").
If anything the fact that it is a children's book makes the scandal much more arrogant in origin.

Trump’s tomes are still struggling to achieve the sort of complexity found in the children’s selections offered within a Scholastic flyer, so we might not be able to qualify his ghostwritten junk for discussion yet.

Perhaps, but Trump's were not post election and that is a significant circumstance. Politicians that were previously nowhere near the "book business" that suddenly get significant book deals (or netflix deals) for "meh" storytelling seem like an unnoticed or ignored soft money situation.

And yet we know about this one. Something or someone within the system took notice.

Imagine how much easier it would be to keep such things in check if elected officials were as transparent as possible with their financials.

Yes, it is certainly imaginary to think that tax returns, or "excessive transparency" would reveal or prevent such an event.
