What's great about cruises? Someone cooking, cleaning a d watching your kids for you while you get to see the carribean in my case. An Alaska cruise would be awesome this time of year. The carnival ships offered a weight room running track above. I just like the slow pace and getting to see parts of the world i had not yet got to. It was cheap in my opinion for what they did fod us.
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Go to your room. I'll let you know when you can come out.

The people in question are also talking about relaxation being a thing. I get that part. Maybe with the cooking/cleaning done you have more time for self indulgence or self renewal? Take a break from the children and do your own thing?

I guess I just like getting some place, getting on the ground and go walking and exploring wherever I'm at.

I dunno. I really don't think cruises are for me. I don't like the idea of being trapped with a bunch of people I can't get away from.

One of the reasons I post on boards is because I can shut you guys off and make you go away when I want to. How do you make people go away on a ship?

I mean legally.

I once covered as a photographer for a friend who needed a break from his cruise photography business. It was a week long cruise down the coast of Mexico. The longest week of my life.

After a couple of hours on the ship I think I had seen every inch of it. When the ship stopped at ports, I used that time to process film and prints and I never really ever got off the boat. I lost any desire to ever go on a cruise again.

The food was good though.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

Cruises are a relatively inexpensive vacation for families. The novelty of the cruise ship does wear off after a couple days, but you don't need to be trapped on the ship with thousands of people the entire time. The best part is the shore excursions. To make the most of a cruise, plan your shore excursions ahead of time. You should only need to be on the ship in the evenings for dinner and bed.

There are so many parts of the ship that nobody hangs out on...the ships are huge...my wife and I always find "our" place. Sunsets are awesome on the ship. You can pay big money and get a balcony if you want to be a hermit.

You would like the hot tub's though, Guaranteed fat drunk people, usually a Raider fan, in them, ..I know...Vegas!

Honor, your experience and reason for trying a cruise for the first time line up almost perfectly with mine.

A few years back the my wife and I took my grandparents on an Alaskan cruise, as the location was on their bucket list but health/age made them feel like they needed some help exploring it. I was reluctant as we usually try to go a little native when we vacation and a cruise seemed counter to that idea, I also don't care much for cramped spaces.

I was really surprised with how enjoyable it was though. As you mentioned the food was actually quite good and we honestly spent a ton of time off the boat. The various activities at each port allowed the wife and I to do some things a little more up our alley while the grandparents could still enjoy the majesty that is Alaska at their own pace.

If we did separate activities during the day it still allowed us evenings together and that was an absolute blast. That may be related to what some other posters have suggested, the company you are with will dictate how enjoyable the trip will be. It doesn't hurt that there were several different entertainment options.

I will say I don't think they are for everyone and apart from a river cruise I'm not sure I'd do one again. But they definitely were much better than I expected and you can add my anecdotal evidence to your stack, Jersey Girl.

As a total buzz-killing aside, we really should not have cruises.
