Democrats make the money and Republicans benefit.

"Take the case of Kentucky. In 2017, the state received $40 billion more from the federal government than it paid in taxes. That’s about one-fifth of the state’s G.D.P.; if Kentucky were a country, we’d say that it was receiving foreign aid on an almost inconceivable scale.

This aid, in turn, supports a lot of jobs. It’s fair to say that far more Kentuckians work in hospitals kept afloat by Medicare and Medicaid, in retail establishments kept going by Social Security and food stamps, than in all traditional occupations like mining and even agriculture combined"

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Republicans fear "the takers" because they damned know themselves. They whine about personal responsibility without ever actually assuming it.

Republicans are a ball and chain on progress. damned idiot hicks.

That sweet government cash is important to a State filled with raging, anti-government conservatives. Check out what they take in from defense contracts, for starters.

Then there’s the question of Mitch McConnell’s wife possibly steering federal projects towards the state -

And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Kentucky is already on it. No need for Bernie or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

apart from the OP citing an opinion piece by a liberal Berkley deadbeat...perhaps you would be edified by an examination of how, say for example, a state like California has such a thriving economy (ok, lets pretend it does)...exploitation of illegal immigrant labor, massive government subsidies via military, ...oh wait, economic illiteracy abounds with you guys.

Um, the OP is stooped and opinions presented as facts are cool...especially when offered by wannabe despots from down under.

I thought California was the eighth largest economy in the world. Maybe they should build more gyms in those 10 poorest red states since they have high obesity rates and instances of diabetes.
According to CDC statistics, the seven states where the highest percentage of adults have been diagnosed with diabetes as of 2010 are:
Mississippi (11.3%)
Alabama (11.1%)
West Virginia (10.7%)
Louisiana (10.3%)
Tennessee (10.2%)
Oklahoma (10.1%)
Kentucky (10.1%)

Not very proportionate considering California is literally 10 times the size of Kentucky.

California has a GDP of over $3 trillion, raking as the fifth largest economy in the world. It is home to 10% of Fortune 1000 companies. Personal income per capita California ranks 6th with 117% of the national average. But for subgenius, Western Liberalism is the reason for this. Oh, and those dirty Mexicans.
