Bernie Sanders' politics are to the right of Norwegian countries that are not, in fact, wastelands. He fits squarely within new deal liberalism that did not leave the US a wasteland.

What do you think happens to people's opinion of socialist policy when your promised wasteland doesn't come? If your opposition is BS hysteria, people aren't going to listen to you when your BS hysteria doesn't come to fruition. You're like the parent who tells their kids that smoking pot will leave them destitute and mentally ill. When those kids grow up and see this isn't the normal outcome of smoking weed, that might make them more inclined to smoke weed.

The type of people engaged in an intellectual debate over whether a group of progressive representatives are most representative of the leadership of the Democratic party is already politically engaged enough to not be a persuadable voter. I think you are imagining politics as a debate of ideas. It is among a tiny group of elites, but that's not what moves voters that swing elections. When these tactics work or don't, the debate is like a pantomime of real debate. People say things that sound like they are part of an argument, but they aren't. It's not about cogency. It's about things like fears, hopes, and cultural affiliations. You don't deal with that by having some talking point ready about the relative influence of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. You deal with it by having an alternative narrative that appeals.
