There are many reasons for obsession, and many of them are not positive.

Australia has to appreciate that they came to our defense when the Japanese were coming down. I remember my family telling me that they were going to defend Australia at the Brisbane General Douglas MacArthur set up his headquarters in Brisbane. A work colleague who was a teen during the war told me that the American soldiers would line up for leave and in one hand get their pay and in the other a bunch of condoms. Japan could in no way hold the whole of Australia so were only able to invade the north.The Coral sea battle put and end to their plans.There is a book Oversexed Overpaid and Over here about the presence of American soldiers in Australia. The Americans had more money than the Aussies to buy stockings,, chocolates etc.

Boy, with the way Aussie Guy likes to point out American income inequality, fixating particularly on the South because he's a bigot, one would think Australia was a paradise! I guess we'll have to take Robert Kirby's Moksha's word for it, and understand AG simply chooses to put his head squarely into the ground like a 'native Australian ostrich' does when it comes to his own home country. :(
