Jersey Girl, I missed one of your questions. The deficit is the difference between what the government takes in as revenue each year and what it spends. We could theoretically have a surplus, but I’m not sure that’s happened in my lifetime. The government borrows the difference, which then increases the total of the national debt. So, deficit/ surplus is revenues and expenses over a year, and the national debt is the accumulation of all those deficits.

There is no necessary reason for the deficit to increase each year. In theory, inflation would increase both revenues and expenses. Increased population should increase both as well. The near doubling of the deficit during Trump’s first three years is a combination of increased spending and the tax cut.

Certainly it is inaccurate to call all Republicans racist. What is clear, however, is that Republicans belong to the racist party.

Being a member of the party makes you complicit. It makes you an enabler. It emboldens real racists. You don't get to disavow racism and support the party at the same time. It's not possible, because your party continues to stoke racial animus.

This is definitely a case where if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Many Republicans hate being called racists. They want to be racist without being identified as such. Voting for Trump is supporting racism, whether you mean to or not.

That is not news to me. I have read much about that. It is my understanding, though, that there is a growing awareness in Mexico that racism is bad, and needs to combatted. It has also long been my understanding that rampant racism is endemic throughout much of Latin America, and that most of the wealth and political power is controlled by the tiny percentage who are nearly pure Caucasian. Of course, none of this negates the moral imperative of fighting and minimizing racism in our own country.
