No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

2:11. The LORD commanded the fish, and it spewed Jonah out upon dry land.

3:1.The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:

3:2.”Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it what I tell you.”

3:3.Jonah went at once to Nineveh in accordance with the LORD’S command.

Nineveh was an enormously large city a three days’ walk across.

3:4.Jonah started out and made his way into the city the distance of one day’s walk, and proclaimed: “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

3:5. And the people of the city looked at him with raised eyebrows and said, "Aren't you the one the fish vomited on the shore?"

3:6. "What's that got to do with anything?"

3:7. "It's just weird; that's all. You're talking fish-puke. You could have showered before you came to town. You smell like fish guts, and you've got goo all over your face and clothes. Combine that with the fact that you're a puppet and not even a real boy yet..."

3:8 "Father wants a real boy, but he makes puppets. He made me in his shop!"

...

I may be getting my stories mixed up here, now that I think about it.

What can we make of this bizarre story? Typical Bible silliness.

Could this story in the Old Testament be a for-shadowing of Jesus? No.

Is the New Testament the Old Testament revealed? No.

Is the Bible 66 books, written by 40 authors, over 2,000 years - Or is it possible that the Bible comes from One Author and that everything in the Old Testament points to Jesus and everything the New Testament points back to Jesus? No.

Following this line of thought, the Babylonian myths and Enuma Elish were simply foretelling the story of Genesis. There are far more parallels between those two documents than anything you think you just found trying to connect two verses separated by thousands of years.

When you have the same people that extensively studied the old mythology, writing the new mythology, we are supposed to be surprised that they write it so that it references and tries to fulfill the old?

And when they get it wrong? When there is 0 evidence for the global flood, 0 evidence for the Exodus, 0 evidence for the slaughter of the innocents?

This reminds of a topic FrankTalk? was promoting several years back, showing how the triumphal entry of Jesus was mathematically predicted in the Old Testament by the prophecies of Daniel - except we now know the calendar of events (birth of Jesus on the Gregorian/Julian calendars is wrong) is off by about 3 years and it blew that theory all to hell.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

More omitted verses from the Bible:
5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes
He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

3.a. And it was heard from the back of the crowd, Doesn't really help me now, Jesus!
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.

4.a. And another said, Is that a prophecy of a fortune cookie?
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.

5.a. Ha! That'll be the day.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

6.a. What you call your basic self-fulfilling prophecy.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

7.a. Ever thought about the fact that everyone alive has never met a murderer they pissed off really badly?
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.

8.a. Well, it's either that or LSD.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.

9.a. Bad cops bad cops. Watcha gonna do? Watcha gonna do when they come for you?
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

10.a. Here we go again. damned snowflakes.
11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

11.a. I appreciate the loyalty. I hope you don't expect it in return, however.
12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

12.a. You can keep what you have, or trade it all away for what's inside this box. What do you want to do?

Verse 2 - Interesting
Verse 6 - The father (Abraham) placed the wood on his son (Issaac) for the sacrifice.
Verse 8 - God himself would provide the lamb for the sacrifice.
Verse13 - He saw a ram? Not a lamb? Hmmmmmmmm? Interesting
Verse 14 - He called that place "The Lord will provide?" -------- 1,500 hundred years later, Jesus (the son) was provided (the lamb of God) by the Father as the ultimate and final sacrifice - on the very same spot.

I see the connections you're trying to draw here to see if they fit or not. I'm not sure that they do. The above text doesn't seem like it's KJV which I am most used to.

That said, what I would want to do with this is to locate the exact words translated from the ancient language.

I'll try to look up something for that as I have time. I think one of my study Bible's can do that. Honestly, there's a online Bible that I cannot for the life of me recall the title, begins with an "S" I think that does the language interpretation.

I bet Gunnar knows what it is.

The Ram instead of the Lamb doesn't exactly fit unless as you say, the declaration that the Lord will provide constitutes foreshadowing. That's why I'm interested in the original language and word usage. Without that, we have only our contemporary literacy with which to draw meaning from ancient scriptures from ancient cultures.

That is to say, we don't understand what we are reading. Most of us are too lazy to make the effort to dig in and investigate fully so we take from scripture whatever interpretation has been delivered to us from the pulpit.

In any case, I don't see foreshadowing specifically in the test of obedience to God unless you are referring to our obedience to God. I don't think that could be compared to the crucifixion of Christ. In order to compare the two, God would essentially have to be talking to himself about his own obedience to himself.

Or Christ's obedience to God. That would fit.

Was all of this clear as mud?

Ceeboo wrote:As Jesus hung on the cross, he said "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me"

What did Jesus mean by this?
Over the years, I have heard a few different ideas - some more interesting than others.

To give an example from today: What if a second grade teacher said "Jack and Jill went up the Hill" - Obviously the class would have known exactly what the teacher was referencing.

Let's get back to Jesus.

Considering the audience was loaded with religious Jews (as well as Pharisees) who were very familiar with the Tanakh (Old Testament) - could Jesus have been referencing something to them that they would have instantly recognized/understood?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Psalm 22 - A psalm of David (1,000BC)

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? 2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. 3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. 4 In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. 5 To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. 8 “He trusts in the LORD,” they say, “let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” 9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast. 10 From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God. 11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. 12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. 13 Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. 15 My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. 16 Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. 17 All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. 19 But you, LORD, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. 20 Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. 21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen. 22 I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. 23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! 24 For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. 25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows. 26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him— may your hearts live forever! 27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, 28 for dominion belongs to the LORDand he rules over the nations. 29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him— those who cannot keep themselves alive. 30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. 31 They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it!
