According to Montana court records, Brockway is a registered violent offender after was convicted for a 2010 assault with a weapon. District Judge John Larson gave him a 10-year suspended sentence.

Anyway, the boy probably didn't know anything about removing his hat. The adult could have informed him and taught him something.
Well, I guess he did teach him something.

That's your takeaway from this? That the boy could have learned something about taking his hat off from a non-violent jackass? The boy doesn't have to remove a god damned thing if he doesn't want to.

Do you think you could possibly dial it down a little when you're replying to me?
I'm not saying that he had to take off his hat. I'm saying that a number of children haven't been taught about that sort of thing and adults jump their crap for no good reason thinking that kids know everything adults know. That and the guy was entirely ballistic to start with.
There was nothing in the reports I read that indicate a conversation took place. Either the kid didn't know about taking his hat off or he did and decided not to do so.
I erred on the side of the kid possibly not knowing. To, you know, inform folks that kids don't know everything that adults know and adults ought to consider that in their interactions.
I see that come into play almost every time I'm in public. That's why I mentioned it here.

What frosts me about this story is that the judge let this repeated perpetrator of random violence go on his own recognizance.

I don't think we can claim this is an American thing. This was a lone nut going ballistic.

The good news is it looks like we're going to get to test the "the President told me to do it" defense.
Relevant bits from the article:
As an aside, the threats to the lawyer and suspect's family are really uncool.
Relevant bits from the article:
The attorney for a 39-year-old man charged with assaulting a child who didn't take his hat off for the national anthem says his client, compromised by a traumatic brain injury, believes he was acting on an order from President Donald Trump.
Jasper said Wednesday that he will seek a mental health evaluation for his client before determining how to proceed further in the defense.
Brockway sustained a traumatic brain injury in a vehicle crash in the winter of 2000, Jasper said. He was on active military duty at Fort Lewis, Washington, at the time, and was driving home to visit family for the holidays, Jasper said. He was honorably discharged from the military due to disability, according to Jasper.
He said Brockway's military background has been central to his identity since suffering the injury to his frontal lobe, which controls cognitive functions like judgement and problem solving.
Couple that injury, Jasper argues, with the president's calls to weed out those who have protested the national anthem or criticized the nation, and Brockway is no longer thinking for himself but responding to a presidential order.
"Obviously he (Brockway) owes a big portion of accountability for what took place, but it's certain that there was other things at work here that definitely contributed," he said.
As an aside, the threats to the lawyer and suspect's family are really uncool.

The man served our country and received brain injuries. I have sympathy for the man because we don't know his behavior before his war injuries. His lawyer said that the man thought he was following Trump's orders. Now that could be a 'the devil made me do it' alibi, but I think someone like this is a prime example as the need for a 'red flag' law.

Is it possible Trump actually ordered this horrendous injury to that boy? Trump has requested physical violence before against those who angered him.
