Sarah Palin’s husband has filed for divorce, the Anchorage Daily News reports. On Friday, Todd Palin filed for divorce from the former vice presidential candidate in Anchorage Superior Court and cited an “incompatibility of temperament between the parties such that they find it impossible to live together as husband and wife” as the reason for the couple’s split after 31 years.

It seems that details like this are always a secret. Many people definitely become abusive in relationships when they don't get their way or their expectations are met. Our culture makes physical abuse criminal but mental and emotional abuse are pretty much fair game legally.

It must have been pretty bad between them for him to do this. He surely already knows that the financial abuse he will soon be subject to by family court and its attorneys will be pretty costly as well. I've seen divorces drag on for decades. Once you have kids, you never really get rid of an abusive person. They always have ways to hurt you.

It wasn't just Sarah Palin but her entire family that experienced her meteoric rise from small town Wasilla to Governor to Vice Presidential Candidate. And to be fair, such a rapid transition could put a strain on any relationship.

There's an old expression: "He got too big for his britches." Perhaps the Palins, collectively, got too big for their britches. Perhaps the best thing for her family's survival would have been for Sarah never to have been elected Governor. I just don't think this family was made to exist in the spotlight.
