The first time my jack Mormon sibling suggested such a caveat to me, I was truly, TRULY shocked, even though I had already been out of the LDS religion for a decade. It had never, EVER occurred to me, in all my time in the LDS church, that I could answering question, or any others, could be done in a non-literal way.

Same!

Imagine the havoc, if all members chose to be as honest about their actions and history with the church as the church has been honest about its own actions and history? And... to never apologize for anything.

in just 2019 alone, midgley has gossiped about dozens of people, both dead and alive, from his mission, from his graduate school experience, from his time as a BYU professor, from his Maxwell Institute experiences, from his volunteer work. He has bragged about beating up a fellow middle school student (now dead) while his teacher cheered him on, about making grown men cry when he threatened their livelihood, about the (in his opinion) well-deserved tragedies of former friends who are now professed enemies, even about a youth in his congregation who had a traffic incident that he decided to make public while including his version of details (i.e. unproven, and disputed by police) about that youth’s illegal drug and excessive alcohol use. He has made up outrageous, unkind, and downright disgusting stories about multiple online anonymous posters, and he has spilled an inordinate amount of ink trying to fish private details out of other commenters.

The Holy Ghost is busy with this special holy chosen servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. The spreading of the Gospel of Gossip has always taken priority over the mere Gospel of Love. The Gospel of Love was for the old days, now the work of the Lord is to ensure that people are convicted, not converted. The armies of the Lord in this Holy War needs to be fine tuned, intellectual armed, spiritually adept with knowledge from on High, and full tithe payers in order to help poor Jesus carry on the War from the Premortal existence where, obviously, the enemies of his chosen Mopologists were the less than valiant, nay even the fence sitters in the War in Heaven, and therefore, let the Lord's holy and chosen words roll forth off of the spiritually uplifting tongues of his servants the Mopologists. Yea, the prophets and apostles are to hold their own tongues lest they say something questionable. Allow the holiest part of the work of the Lord be carried out by the 3rd anointed special Mopologists whose mouths shall be filled with the words of the Holy Ghost. Let the earth tremble, let the populations of the world fear and beat their breasts for the judgment of the Mopologists and their Lord has been let loosed in preparation for the Armageddon of the 2nd coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let all the world beware of the pure venality which the lord shall now unleash due to his wrath, his angry, and his jealousy. Even the Great Lord cannot find words as useful and powerful as his chosen Mopologists, so he has sent his Holy Ghost to enhance, to tune up, and spit forth truth, diamond truth unto the evil, the apostate, the wicked, the non-Mormon. So let it be written, so let it be said.

Apparently irony is boundless.

....And I am also very much concerned about the growing lack of civility in not only public discourse about political and social issues, but also what the fact that people can quarrel on the internet in violent language over matters quite often about which neither know much of anything. What we end up with is the equivalent of drive by shootings in words.
<snipped>

Now what has all this got to do with Dan's blog? Perhaps nothing. However, the existence of two strident factions posting opposing points of view ends up in endless pointless quarrels. My proposed peaceful solution to the endless quarrels by those not interested in learning about the faith of the Saints is simply to ignore them. As tempting as it is to try to correct those whose ideological baggage prevents a rational exchange of ideas is simply not to give those who come to Dan's blog the attention they crave. They are, as a matter of fact, quite ignorable, if not deplorable.

A genuinely rational conversation cannot take place if there is not comity and civility. I have gone two days and only posted one comment in I believe was a clarification of a tiny matter. Please notice that I have not mentioned the names of those who seem to me who post on Dan's blog merely to advance an ideology, or to pick a fight....

Does somebody have a two-day chip for the pugilistic gentleman sitting in the corner? No? Ok, how about 2 one-day chips? A couple of 12-hour chips maybe? We’re all out? How can we be all out?

..... what do you mean, ’he has them all already’ ???

Midgley's intent to improve things is laudable.

Well that didn’t last long.

Lane:

I now have had time to think more about my decision not to respond to those who come to Dan's blog merely to pick a fight or, from the perspective of their world, thrash the faith of Latter-day Saints.

I think that they need to be answered once or twice or even perhaps ten times. "No more slam dunks."

But when one cannot befriend them, and cannot know who they are or why they hold the opinions the do, and keep on upping the rhetorical violence, even what I call the "fun factor" ceases to be relevant. And I now feel sort of ashamed of pounding away at one person who must have set a world's record that should stand as long as I am alive, for posted comments. He has never once addressed a comment in which any Latter-day Saint has tried to educated him on our faith or show the folly of his dogmatic ideology. I should have limited myself to perhaps ten responses and then ignored him.
 you should definitely feel ashamed, midgley. You behave like a toddler throwing a tantrum, whose parents have never once told him NO.

But your point is that we only really have success in an exchange when their is genuine friendship. I cannot document how many years I was part of FairMormon, but it was at least five years. And my only real contribution, other then telling some stories, was responding to question sent to us. For most months I was second in responding to questions that were sent to FM. And I most often did a Google seach on the name in the hopes that I could know who they were.
WOW. So that’s what FairMormon does.

The more I knew about them, the better I could address their questions. For example, just recognizing that someone sending a question from ihug lives in New Zealand, made it possible for me to immediately befriend them. I made well over fifteen good friends in that way. We had something in common. We often knew some of the same people, and so forth. So we could trust each other. One Sunday evening I noticed a question by someone concerned about John Dehlin's antics. And, instead, of going to bed, I typed a brief reply. And offered, as I sometimes did, to have them phone me. This happened early the next morning. In this way I instantly formed a solid friendship with John Dehlin's older sister. And she is now on the FairMormon Board of Directors. And she has interview me, and many people have told me that they very much enjoyed that interview.

The three virtues that Christianity added to the famous cardinal virtues of wisdom, the love of which is philosophy, justice, courage and moderation, are faith, hope and love. And the greatest of these is love, since this is the more important divine attribute than even his power.

I don’t even know what to say. Midgley hounds people about their personal details because he just wants to be good friends? Right.

Given the tons and tons of filthy trash I’ve seen him post in just the past year, I have to believe this is some sort of a re-write to assuage his aching conscience.

In no way could the utter crap he has subjected gemli to, for example, be re-interpreted now as an overture toward friendship, in light of this post.

Midgley’s fake reasons are nothing new, but WOW, what an eye-opener about the shady methods of FairMormon members who have responded to questions from doubting members.

Hi Lemmie,

Those posts deserve responses. I don't suppose you could post links to them, could you? Or if not, at least identify the threads in which they're housed?
