US pulling out of North Syria

Post by _EAllusion »

A lot of anonymously sourced reports this morning are indicating that both NATO allies and the Pentagon were blindsided by Trump's decision to abandon the Kurds to Turkish invasion.

I saw this. It made me sick to my stomach. I have no idea what motivated him to do so, but it feels like sabotage in the same way a person being evicted from a foreclosed on house might start taking the doors off their hinges and punching holes in the wall. To abandon the Kurds to the Turks after their essential role in beating ISIS back is reprehensible. It's the sort of thing that future reporters almost inevitably end up pointing to as the origin point for eventual blowback.

Because it detracts from the stories about his impending impeachment.

It's clear as day. He is doing it for Putin. Why is he doing this for Putin?
That is the real question.

Trump is tweeting about this in a particularly banana-pants crazy manner at the moment. Either it is a sad attempt at distraction or his megalomaniacal idiocy is getting more unhinged. I am not sure which would be worse.

I suppose that Trump is under the impression that the US can manage perfectly well without allies.

If I am wrong about his attitude on this point, then I can only assume he thinks that other potential allies in future will be willing to risk their lives and treasure to work with a country that can dump them whenever it feels like it. Personally, I don't think that is very likely.

But then I am not a very stable genius.

(I leave aside the small point that if the Turks make a large incursion into Kurdish-controlled areas, then the Kurdish forces will move up to confront them, leaving the ISIS forces they are currently engaging and confining to go their own sweet way in Iraq. Good times.)

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over...

Maybe we shouldn’t give a nut job incapable of empathy the ability to obliterate human civilization within minutes.

Crazy idea, I know.
