Personally I will say when I listen regularly to podcasts I will contribute. I toss a few hundred a year to Mormon Stories, RFM and Sam Harris. There are a couple others I ought to give to. That doesn't mean I approve of everything they do or are. But if I enjoy their podcasts I feel I ought to give some financial support since they don't charge for a download.

I still have you on ignore. I had to logout before I saw this.
I feel like I have repeated the following 1000 times and you have a long history of being very rude to me. But here it is again: I don’t come here to share documentation. This is just a message board. (Why would I do that? What would be my incentive to share it here?) Rather, I come here to create dated documentation.
The information isn’t public because John isn’t transparent and is late. That is the point.
My experience it Dehlin is transparent on finances and no the Form 990 is not late. You should stop repeating the false claim.
I am in your camp on this one. I am not saying you’re not moving forward. I hope it didn’t come across like that, more like, I agreed w Exile that when relationships end moving forward is often good, but your situation is different. Your situation is about accountability from John.
I help non-profs and for profs brand. This includes organizations involved in activism. Mormon/open Stories would’ve died really quickly in a normal realm but in the Mormon realm this non profit is still thriving. I guess it thrives because of the strange Mormon culture. John skirts the line when it comes to his non-profit status in the same way the apologists that receive comp vacations skirt the line by not reporting.
John should’ve formed a for profit. Anyways, he gets a fresh crop of followers, as members leave the church and most of these members are okay with him earning this income and giving himself a secret raise or maybe using funds to pay for additional costs. They trust John, have you seen some of the safe sweaters and collared shirts he wears? He plays the role.
I was at a meetup two months ago and we laughed about his income, funds for whatever stuff he needs to do his job (god knows what that all goes to), and then still requesting first class flights and stuff like that...
The dude is a charlatan. Whatever. He will release the finances soon and very few will say a peep. If he’s smart he’ll place a billboard and interview a newly ex’d personality right around the same time as his finances. That should distract many.
Unmmm Mormon Stories is a 501(c)(3). So it is an NFP. And his salary if declared on the annual Form 990. So I am not sure why you say this since you say you help NFPs. Someone already posted a link to Dehlin's 2017 salary and the 990. His salary was $109k. And he pays taxes on that salary just like anyone would. Nothing nefarious here.
I dunno, I get the vibe this is a groupie gone bad. I really resent the board getting sucked into this sick crap. If you have something on Dehlin, do it the right way. Not this chicken drive by stuff. Grow up or get help. Dehlin has done some good, whether he's an evil “F” or not. I haven't seen where you've done a goddamn thing but come on this board with this crap.
As I was writing the above post quoting you, I was thinking about how to word it in hopes of not leaving the false impression that I was responding to you personally, but rather that I was writing to all the readers. I was aware, even as so pressed ‘submit, that I hadn’t fully reached my objective. But I decided to get myself a decaf mocha instead of revising. It was delicious. I also bought one of chocolate peanut butter cups they sell at Starbucks. My favorite. I apologize for any impression I left that I had made assumptions about you personally.
Anyhoo.... yes, what you say is what he’ll do. But he’s incorporated in Arizona and he’s siphoning tax-deductible donations to himself. That’s inurement. I predict that Arizona status will play a role in his eventual downfall.... but we’ll see how it all plays out.
Also, he announces in the last seven minutes of the link in the opening post that his new Thrive Business is an LLC. Thrive will pay the Open Stories Foundation a marketing fee for its use of the podcast feed (John’s most powerful asset.... owned by the 501(c)3). From where I sit, Thrive appears to be his safety plan considering the many circumstances.
Oh my. You clearly have no idea of the laws about these things nor what you are talking about.

There are things John does that are not to my taste, but I have supported the podcast because he has really interesting interviews. Supporting podcasts that bring you good content is the right thing to do, in my opinion.

The difference between Rosebud and Jason Bourne on the issue of NFPs and taxes is that Jason Bourne is a tax professional who knows what he is talking about.

So therefore Jason Bourne knows it’s okay for a 501(c)3 to siphon tax-deductible donations to a podcast host. That’s what nonprofits are for.
The difference between Jason Bourne and me (and John for that matter) is that John and I both know why Arizona is significant. Jason Bourne doesn’t.
All of this means, John, that your choice is to come more clean now... or not. What’s your move?
