Re: Present from Ebenezer Trump
I know lots of developmentally disabled individuals on Quest benefits who have to barely scrape by just to eat. It's possible to be creative with food purchases to do Ok if the benefit formula hasn't screwed them - which it not infrequently does - but it takes a fair amount of talent with menu planning and food preparation, which aren't usually things that developmentally disabled folks receiving Quest benefits have an abundance of.

Where I do agree with ajax is that we need to find a balance between genuine charity, pragmatism, and not killing a man's spirit through kindness. People who receive money become enslaved to it. People who earn money generally grow in spirit. That said, I don't know what the numbers are vis a vis people who use assistance on a temporary basis versus those who finagle their way into permanent subsistence via social security, medicaid, EBT, section 8 and the like. Whatever the case may be, I'd rather help our own out versus throwing trillions are ____ wars. That's for sure.
Are you against attaching work requirements to welfare as the rest of those here seem to be?
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

That's called a job, Ajax. And since you're presumably for smaller government I'm not sure how we can ensure this without creating more bureaucracy? But, to answer your question, I'd be totally for it. I would absolutely vote for a proposal that those collecting welfare have to put in x-amount of hours sweeping streets, picking up garbage, or performing some sort of blue collar work that no one really wants to do. Why not.

What are your thoughts on this current proposal to alter the allowed monthly utility allowance in figuring the benefit amount? This would cut $31-75 per recipient for those Yankees in the Northern States.

I'd call it a government employee job. If someone is disabled to the point that they cannot find a job in the private market, perhaps working for the government would give them the flexibility to still do what they are capable of doing while still having responsibilities like the rest of us.

Huh. Ajax is for bigger government. Who knew a national socialist would be for bigger government?

I think the benefits for those that qualify are already ridiculously low. People are right to point out that you cannot live o minimum wage, at least not anything close to what I would call a western standard of living.
I'd like to stick to talking about attaching work requirements to these benefits. The fact that we can't even agree on that is why I really think we need separate countries. Our view of right and wrong is just irreconcilable.

Ajax. Where would you draw your new nation’s borders, and how do you propose to keep it ideologically and politically together since democracy doesn’t work over the long run?

I don't know. Isn't there some way to have a Republican USA and a Democrat USA. The reason we even had a United States as opposed to just states in the first place was the need for a cooperative national defense effort. We don't really need that any more do we? Maybe a start would be to just get rid of the federal government entirely and just have states.
We kind of see people migrating at least somewhat based on state property tax and income tax rates or even in the reverse based on the availability of public welfare benefits. I know the difference is more rural vs. urban now instead of southern vs. northern. But I think it could be good. Think about it. You don't really want to have to live in the same country as people like me. It could be good for both sides.

I think people generally go where they feel is an opportunity to have a life. Your problem is if your ideologically pure state becomes prosperous you're going to have people wanting to move there and also subsequent generations who are born into relative comfort tend to bend Liberal. Perhaps if you make your states really, really crappy people who vote Democrat will avoid it?
