Midgley explains why he was such a cranky, mean and nasty teacher at BYU:

About twenty of us had to suffer much abuse from a native speaking French professor at Brown by translating portions of this book. She was nasty, mean and sarcastic--she shouted and laughed at those of us who took that class. But I passed that class and hence passed the French requirement. That very demanding and cranky woman helped me in many ways for what became part of what I taught at BYU.

Yet another howler from the Midge:

Louis "I couldn't pass a German proficiency test" Midgley > Unconvinced

I have tried hard to be gracious to Unconvinced.

So that's where he learned to be nasty, mean, and sarcastic., at least in part.

Is this related to Dr. Midgley's own frail condition, or has he been this irascible for some time?

I’m afraid I can’t speak to that question. Perhaps, though, we will find some satisfying answers in Dr. Midgley’s forthcoming The Confessions of Saint Louis, which will chronicle his aggressive and combative youth (beating up a junior high classmate, starring as a member of the East High debate team, etc.); his 1950-1952 mission to convert the Māori; his legendary years at Brown University; his 1980 decision to sacrifice his career as a political scientist to become a Mopologist; his various confrontations with Stephen Crary, Ernest Wilkinson, Cleon Skousen, D. Michael Quinn and New Mormon historians, cultural Mormons, Signature Books, Marvin Hill, Sandra Tanner, James White, various antimormonoids, Grant Palmer, Rodney Meldrum, Hartman Rector, and John Dehlin; his time with FARMS and the Maxwell Institute; his 2012 booting from the Maxwell Institute by the evil Dr. Bradford; his 2017 sanctification by the Holy Spirit; and his recent posting-up-a-storm at Sic et Non.

I am also expecting a few insights in the pages of the forthcoming festschrift in honor of Dr. Midgley, especially an autobiographical piece titled “A Giving of Accounts” and a piece titled “The Ballad of Lou the Mean” by Bill Hamblin.
“A scholar said he could not read the Book of Mormon, so we shouldn’t be shocked that scholars say the papyri don’t translate and/or relate to the Book of Abraham. Doesn’t change anything. It’s ancient and historical.” ~ Hanna Seariac

Had to google that one:

Well now friends just lend an ear
For you're now about to hear, the ballad of Lou the Mean
It's a song that's newly made and Professor and Shades
And the Shulem Kid are singin' it for you
Lou the Mean..., Lou the Mean ...
The baddest cat you've ever seen.

It's a hanging day in Provo, Utah
Provo, Utah, nineteen-ninety-four
They're gonna drop Lou the Mean
Through the gallows floor.

He bad-mouthed a man in Provo, Utah
Provo, Utah, bad-mouthed a man it's true
And that is why they're a-hanging, hanging Lou the Mean
He has the smile of a billy goat (Fights like the Devil)
The eyes of a billy goat (Bites like the Devil)
The face of a billy goat (I say he's the Devil)
He's mean and nasty through and through.

This should be a Mopologist Classic. In the genre of abnormal Psychology. Get your copy now.

I kid you not. There is a chapter entitled, The Ballad of Lou the Mean, by William Hamblin.

This chapter alone, makes the $30 price tag worth it.

Has anyone seen The Midge lately? Has he stopped posting at SEN? I really hope not.

Didn't he say he was taking a couple of weeks off to visit New Zealand where he is hoping to stalk Gina Colvin in person? Maybe we should give her a heads up.
