The signs from several countries are looking like COVID-19 is likely to still be with us in April. Everybody has different risk tolerance, but absent an actual epidemic in the US or advice from the CDC to avoid air travel, I’d hit those beaches.

I'm stalling on booking the tickets. I want out of here! Then I've got another thing in September. We'll just see how this goes.

That’s because the totals now include cases from the Diamond Princess that the State Department flew back to the US. So far, all but a couple of the US cases are people that caught the virus overseas. It isn’t spreading generally within the US. If person to person transmission starts to increase in the US, that’s cause for concern.

In the face of madness, rationality has no power - Xiao Wang, US historiographer, 2287 AD.

Every record...falsified, every book rewritten...every statue...has been renamed or torn down, every date...altered...the process is continuing...minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Ideology is always right.

It will be interesting to hear what the President has to say in his news conference today. The numbers right now look promising: total active cases declining, more people recovering than catching the disease, and a successful effort by the U.S. (so far) to prevent any outbreak.

You have to dig into the numbers to understand why the WHO and CDC are worried. Early on, the spread of the disease to other countries was from China. Now that's shifted to Italy and Iran. The initial cases in both countries were, if I recall correctly, not discovered in travelers returning from China, but from people exposed to travelers returning from China. By the time those cases were caught, the disease was spreading in an uncontrolled manner inside the country. This mean that a traveler to the US from Italy who arrived in the last week or two, could have the disease and already spread it to many people. Because 80% of the cases are mild, it's not likely that we will identify the cases as COVID-19 as opposed to seasonal flu until someone ends up in the hospital with a serious case.

Iran does not have a handle on its outbreak at all. The death rate is too high, indicating there are many cases in the population that no one knows about. The disease is spreading from Iran across the middle East, and it's not clear how effective containment measures can be at this point.

Will Trump listen to the experts at the CDC? Or will he listen to Rush Limbaugh's claim that the press is over-hyping the risk to hurt Trump?

It doesn't help that the guy who is supposed to be in charge doesn't understand that the Johns Hopkins website (which I accessed with no problem last night) is based on information on both the CDC and WHO websites. I believe there are comparable maps on both sites.

This is one of the things that scares me the most about Trump as President. This country is now being led by a man who refuses to listen to any experts, however eminently well qualified, who say anything, however well corroborated, that conflicts with his preconceptions about what is true or what he thinks ought to be true or wishes were true. His ignorance about science and how things in general actually work is abysmal, and he displays almost zero interest and intellectual curiosity in learning anything beyond what he thinks he already knows.
No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.
