I will say that I think you've overstated the importance of the office of President.

For me, the huge takeaway from the Trump Presidency is really this.... the position is so inconsequential that a complete moron could do it and the economy will just cruise right along without skipping a beat.

I mean really, so long as he's not a autocrat intent on usurping all the powers of government, that should be something to look forward to as a pleasant change and a glimmer of hope that our Democracy can yet be salvaged.

I mean what's the worst case scenario with Biden's presumed senility? I just don't think the job description calls for the kind of intellectual awareness that would justify wishing him dead.

Trump is doing major, potentially irreparable harm to the country with is incompetence before you even get to his malice. The institutions of American hegemony are a dumpster fire at the moment. It's an ironic thing for the "America First" crowd, but if you actually think that is a sincere, meaningful position, then chances are you lack the capacity to understand the how the US wields geopolitical influence.

Gaffes are gaffes, and each candidate in history has their share...it is expected when all they do is talk for months, especially given the tough schedule.

Brit Hume had a classic line last night, he said that some folks are saying that if Biden gets the nomination, "the only loser at the Trump/Biden debates will be the English language." It genuinely made me laugh.

But honestly, Biden seems to be showing early signs of dementia. Maybe he is just tired, but he is certainly struggling. It will be fun moving forward though...SNL is going to have a heyday.

Trump's brain is a bowl of jelly, but he benefits from having crazy old man energy and the media treating is inability to string together coherent thoughts as a wacky character trait that should be edited down for the benefit of the American people. Because speaking like you have Alzheimer's is zany.

Biden gets no such benefit. His team probably should be trying to portray his declining mental and physical vigor as part of is affable gaffe-machine persona.

You're certainly right about the attacks that will be forthcoming on Biden and his son, but I'd much rather defend that position than the one about Socialism. Bernie has done a horrible job up to this point explaining and defending his positions on that and given the wealth accrued by Trump's kids during his first term, it should be easy to counter back when he brings up Hunter in Ukraine.

If you never have, I highly recommed watching some raw footage of Trump speeches that aren't written for him and then reading how the media covers that speech. It's as misleading as portraying FDR like he wasn't in a wheelchair. Trump will go on lunatic rambles with significant word-finding problems, inability to stay on topic, losing his entire train of thought mid-sentence, all dotted with semantic errors and pronunciation problems. Because chances are he was trying to say something stupid in the first place, the effect is stunning. But then the media will jump in, isolate snippets, and fit his comments into a prefabricated narrative and report that's what he said. So Trump will go on a rant about how windmills cause syphilis in which it sounds like he's having a stroke, and the NYT headline will be something like, "Trump lays out his pro fossil fuel agenda." Or he'll hold a rally where he sounds like Hitler after he shot himself in the head, and the local newspapers will report, "Trump holds boisterous, colorful rally at [local convention center]."

I've never seen Biden covered like this and I don't expect it to start.

I have zero faith that "Omg! Socialism!" is tougher grounds to defend than whatever Biden will be on the defense regarding this election. The odds that Barr/the Senate is going to announce some new shocking development into some investigation of Biden that the media will credulously run with days before the election seems decent. No matter who Democrats run, it's going to be something.

I agree with all of this, but this isn't due to Trump's senility. Trump is just a monster of a human being. I am just not sure your fears of a Biden administration are justified, at least not to the extent that would warrant wishing him dead. If Biden gets elected, he tries to reestablish Obamacare, he replaces Ginsburg, he tries to get the deficit under control, he reverses most if not all of Trump's horrible policies, etc. That I think he can do even if he has other people doing most of the legwork for him, which seems to be the case in most administrations anyway.

Ronald Reagan lost his mental faculties long before his second term ended and he had people in place to make things ran smoothly.

Reagan's second term was infamously much worse than his first.
